Beloved Morro Bay restaurant to close after 39 years. ‘My very favorite Mexican food’
After 39 years of business, an iconic Morro Bay restaurant will close this weekend as its owners retire, the business announced in a Facebook post this week.
Morro Bay residents Nick and Becky Mendoza opened Lolo’s Mexican Restaurant in 1985.
The family-run business serves a variety of dishes, from homemade chile verde to seafood pasta. Located at 2848 Main St., the restaurant also offers a striking view of Morro Rock.
After almost four decades of service, the couple decided to retire to spend time with their grandchildren, travel and enjoy Morro Bay, according to the post.
The restaurant is officially expected to close on Sunday.
“We will truly miss our wonderful patrons who have supported us through the years,” the post said. “We are grateful to be able to live in such a caring and supportive community.”
By Thursday afternoon, the Facebook post had garnered more than 550 comments — with folks sharing memories of the restaurant and thanking the Mendozas for decades of delicious food.
A handful of fans even asked the Mendozas to publish a cookbook of their family recipes.
“Lolo’s has been a staple in our lives since I can remember,” one person wrote. “My very favorite Mexican food — I have yet to find anything that comes close — and always a happy, welcoming atmosphere.”
They continued: “You will be so missed! What a wonderful legacy and impact you have made with your restaurant. Wishing you a wonderful retirement!”
