Thai food, cheese, bao buns and more: 8 new shops are about to open at SLO Public Market

Eight new food and beverage businesses are either now open or set to open over the next couple of weeks at the new SLO Public Market.

The commercial complex, which will have more than 20 merchants when in full operation, is located on a 4-acre parcel at 3845 S. Higuera St. at the corner of Tank Farm Road and South Higuera in San Luis Obispo.

According to a SLO Public Market news release, the eateries opening, some with limited menus and hours, are the following:

Baht Thai Food — opened Wednesday with a limited menu. Once ready, Baht will transition into a build-your-own noodle bar (hours to be posted soon).

Bing’s Bao Buns — opens Saturday serving from noon until they sell out with menu items including Fried Chicken & Fluffy Bao, the news release notes.

Central Coast Creamery — opens Wednesday offering gourmet cheese made at its Paso Robles facility, as well as other gourmet cheeses and charcuterie. It will offer gourmet grilled cheeses starting in January.

Kraken Coffee Co. — opening within the week, offering pour-over coffee, lattes, teas, cold brew and pastries.

Mama Ganache Chocolates — opens Friday with fair trade chocolate truffles and more.

Night Shift Cookie Co. — opens Thursday with handmade cookies and macarons.

Perfect Scoop Ice Cream — opens Friday with water buffalo ice cream. It works with Central Coast Creamery to create cheese-infused ice creams.

Veg on the Edge — offering vegan food “soon” with a West African twist, including tacos, burgers, stews, and more.

Holiday Maker’s Market to be held this weekend

Additionally, this weekend the SLO Public Market will hold its first public event, a Holiday Maker’s Market event, with craft vendors, live music, beer and wine, food workshops, a toy and food drive, and more.

The event takes place Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

“There will be 50 local makers spread along the courtyard selling their handmade items, which make the perfect holiday gifts,” SLO Public Market said in a news release.

The market is teaming up with the Makeshift Muse Maker’s Market to host the event. Makeshift Muse seeks to encourage pop-up shopping experiences.

In the upstairs Event Center on Saturday at noon, a speaker series, hosted by Creating 805, will feature Hamish and Jill Marshall, the entrepreneurs behind SLO Brew Rock, The Carrisa and more. Attendees can reserve their spots through Eventbrite.

On Sunday, the Event Center will host a candle-making workshop with Mallory Wreden, founder of Girl Who Loves Vintage regarding how to make “gorgeous candles in an intimate setting,” a news release noted. Tickets are $50 and available on Eventbrite.
