San Luis Obispo will be getting some “hand-held happiness” when popular restaurant chain Wetzel’s Pretzels opens a location downtown, the company said.

Wetzel’s Pretzels will move into 852 Higuera St., a few doors down from Ross Dress for Less and Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Lab.

The 1,075-square-foot space was previously occupied by The Sock Drawer.

“SLO is the perfect location for a Wetzel’s Pretzels, since it is one of the larger cities in California that Wetzel’s currently doesn’t have a location,” a company representative wrote in an email. “This upcoming location is close to Cal Poly and Higuera Street has the perfect layout of retail, restaurants, and tourists. We will provide hungry folks the grab and go meal or snack they are looking for.”

Wetzel’s Pretzels will offer foods such as bite-sized hot dogs, seasoned pretzels and lemonade, the representative said.

The pretzel store is expected to open this summer, according to store officials.

The space will be remodeled to give it a “fresh, modern look that will reflect our brand’s commitment to our exceptional standards,” the Wetzel’s Pretzels representative noted in an email.

The Sock Drawer moved out of the Higuera Street space in 2020 after more than a decade as a downtown retailer, but the store still offers its products for sale online.

Wetzel’s Pretzels got its start in Redondo Beach in 1994. The business now has nearly 350 locations nationwide, and will continue to add new restaurants, according to store officials.

The new San Luis Obispo location will advertise open positions closer to its opening date.
