This restaurant once boasted the ‘Greatest sandwich in America’ and it’s coming to SLO
A sandwich shop franchise that was once honored for having the “Greatest Sandwich in America” is coming soon to San Luis Obispo, filling a location near Cal Poly.
Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, a national chain that opened in Little Italy in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1976 is coming to 791 E. Foothill Blvd., in the Foothill Plaza Shopping Center near Panda Express and California Fresh Market.
The business plans to open the last week of April, becoming the first of its shops on the Central Coast.
“We are excited to begin introducing Capriotti’s unique products to the market,” a spokesperson said. “Our location is in the heart of San Luis Obispo, and our franchise partners are building a great-looking new shop, so we are excited to introduce Capriotti’s to the market, and expand into additional locations in the near future.”
The shop is being opened by local franchise partners Randy Stinchfield and Drew Armbruster.
It has a 40-year tradition of slow-roasting whole, all-natural turkeys in-house every day.
Capriotti’s The Bobbie sandwich — featuring homemade turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and mayonnaise — was named the Greatest Sandwich in America by AOL.com readers in 2009 and has received honors in several other “best sandwich” lists every year since then, store officials said.
“Capriotti’s cold, grilled and vegetarian subs, cheese steaks and salads are available at more than 116 locations across the United States,” the business said in an email.
Capriotti’s will open more than 40 new locations nationwide this year, including a number of new shops throughout Southern California, according to store officials.
