Hungry Fisherman is back open in Morro Bay after 3 months of renovations

The Hungry Fisherman restaurant in Morro Bay has reopened after a three-month closure for renovations.

From October to mid-January, the building was under construction, updating everything from electrical and plumbing to the interior decor, according to owners and brothers Pablo and Francisco Rivera.

“The only thing that’s not new are the cooks,” Pablo Rivera said with a smile.

Another thing that’s unchanged? The restaurant’s familiar fisherman mural, which was painted in 1984.

The Rivera brothers worked their way up from dishwashers to cooks and, eventually, to owners in 2005.

Rivera said he has been hoping to remodel the 399 Beach St. building for the past 10 years, but they knew it would be an expensive undertaking. Rivera did not disclose how much the renovation cost.

“Its a building that’s been here since the 1960s, so i think it was time to do a little touch-up,” Rivera said.

The brothers said they initially thought the project would only take six weeks or so, but there was more to update than anticipated. The restaurant reopened on Jan. 16.

The renovated space features an open layout, a small electric fireplace and all new state-of-the-art kitchen equipment.

Rivera said The Hungry Fisherman also has an upgraded menu with more breakfast plates, including eggs Benedict, and more hamburger options. He said there are more senior discounts as well.

“It feels great (to be open). Every day there were some people going by ... asking, ‘Are you open?’” Rivera said.

The Hungry Fisherman is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.
