Tastee-Freez, Wienerschnitzel restaurant in SLO County closes. Here’s why

An Atascadero combination restaurant that offered both hot dogs and ice cream closed Saturday after more than 10 years in the city.

The Tastee-Freez and Wienerschnitzel restaurant near the intersection of East Front Street and Montecito Avenue had its last day of business on Jan. 25, said Glenda Vaquerano, public relations manager for the Galardi Group, which owns the two fast food chains.

Owner John Sidders announced the restaurant’s opening in 2007, according to previous Tribune stories.

The Tastee-Freez-Wienerschnitzel building sold in November 2019, and the new owner doubled the rent from $4,000 to more than $8,000 with taxes and insurance, Sidders told The Tribune.

“It was going from a mildly-profitable situation to a non-profitable situation,” he said.

The Atascadero restaurant was the last free-standing Tastee-Freez, Sidders said.

“We’re certainly sad to leave the city and our loyal customers,” he said.
