'Today' show host Dylan Dreyer speaks out on 'painful' secret miscarriage
Motherhood is often a family endeavor, but Dylan Dreyer is opening up about its lonely side.
During a candid discussion on her "Parent Chat" podcast, the "Today" show host and guest weather anchor reflected on previously navigating a secret miscarriage while on vacation with her friends.
Dreyer, 44, shares three sons – Calvin, 9; Oliver, 6; and Russell, 4 – with her estranged husband Brian Fichera.
"I've suffered one miscarriage," Dreyer told guests Nick Viall and Natalie Joy on the July 2 episode. "And I remember we were kind of on a group vacation, so there's just a lot of people around and everybody's happy, everybody's on vacation, and I was hiding the fact that I was pregnant."
Although Dreyer was "surrounded by people" when her miscarriage took place, the news personality detailed the emotional isolation she felt at the time, recalling, "There's literally no one I can talk to."
"I'm, like, crying in my bed in so much pain," Dreyer said. "No one really tells you how physically painful it is. And I'm like, 'Man, I just wish I could share this with someone.' And you can't always do that."
Miscarriage is the "sudden loss of a pregnancy before the 20th week," according to Mayo Clinic. While there are various causes, many miscarriages occur because the unborn baby does not develop properly during gestation. Approximately 10 to 20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage.
Per Mayo Clinic, physical symptoms of a miscarriage can include vaginal bleeding, pain or cramping in the pelvic area or lower back, the passage of fluid or tissue from the vagina and fast heartbeat.
Viall, who has his own history of miscarriages with wife Joy, lamented the stigma associated with pregnancy loss and how it can discourage mothers from seeking the support they need.
"I don't know if [it's] society or what [that] has said, 'Keep this private, don't tell anyone.' And I get it. It's difficult," Viall said. "Some tragedy happens and you don't want to have to go back. But I think as an almost negative consequence, we have made a bunch of mothers feel like they almost can't share it."
