This Top Florida Retirement Destination Has Majestic Manatees, Stunning River Views, and Breathtaking Springs
Florida is chock full of beautiful retirement destinations that many people spend their entire careers dreaming about. And while not all parts of the Sunshine State are created equal when it comes to things like sense of community, affordable housing, and pleasant weather, there is one spot that hits all the high notes, according to a new report.
Now, it's been named one of the best places to retire in the U.S., and I have to admit that I can totally see why.
Homosassa Springs, Florida, Named Top Retirement Destination
When it comes to retirement, you can't get much better than Florida. The state has tax-friendly laws that make it easy for retirees to protect their nest egg, while also offering a break from those cold northern winters.
According to U.S. News and World Report, those are just some of the factors that put Homosassa Springs at the top of their list of the Best Places to Retire. In fact, the town ranked number three on that list, number four on the Best Places to Live in Florida list, and number 205 on the overall Best Places to Live list.

How Much Does it Cost to Live in Homosassa Springs?
It looks like Homosassa Springs has a lot to offer budget-savvy retirees, including affordable housing. According to Zillow, the average home value is $232,432 as of April 2026, which is almost half the national average.
Additionally, BestPlaces notes that a single person would only need to make around $2,600 a month to live comfortably here, which works out to $31,200 for the year. While that's slightly more than the average Social Security payout, it is doable if you have invested well or if you have other income streams to supplement your payment.
It looks like the town also has a lower cost of living when it comes to many necessities, including:

Homosassa Springs is Home to a Ton of Wildlife
Of course, there are other things to consider when moving to the area, including Mother Nature. Some of the region's beauty, which makes this such a desirable location-including the crystal-clear springs, manatees, and beautiful birds-can also make it a no-go for some people. That's because the area is also home to alligators and venomous snakes, such as the water moccasin.
That being said, those who love wildlife, or else don't mind staying away from the scarier kinds, will get a kick out of spending their golden years in this natural landscape.
