‘Fortnite' X ‘Project Hail Mary' Crossover Features Co-Op & Live Events
“Fortnite” is getting a new crossover event tied to the upcoming Ryan Gosling film, “Project Hail Mary.” The event, in collaboration with User Generated Content platform Chartis, includes new Minigame Box modes within the larger “Fortnite” ecosystem, as well as live events that will tie into the real-world marketing campaign of the Phil Lord and Chris Miller movie.
The main course here is a trio of new games added to the Minigame Box mode. There’s a variation of the Chained Together mode, tailored to the co-op sensibilities of “Project Hail Mary.” There’s also Astrophage Prop Hunt, which takes a cue from 2017’s “Prey” and has a team of scientists trying to find and expose all shape-shifting Astrophage monsters, utilizing brand new movement and teleportation mechanics that haven’t been used in “Fortnite” before. Finally, there’s “Rocky’s Language Puzzle,” which has players engage in a trivia game, answering questions by running through multiple-choice gates.

In addition to these modes, there will also be multiple Live Events that tie into the marketing of the movie, including an event that will link directly with a preview screening at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles on March 16.
Curiously, this is a different type of crossover for the long-running live-service multiplayer game. Usually, “Fortnite” releases player skins or scenarios inspired by action-packed superhero movies like Marvel, DC, and Star Wars. By contrast, “Project Hail Mary” is more of a high-concept sci-fi film aimed more towards adults than the typical “Fortnite” crowd. I imagine the idea is to get younger players interested in seeing the $200 million movie in theaters, while coaxing older players back into the ever-popular “Fortnite” ecosystem.
I like the idea of “Fortnite” crossovers actually utilizing the themes, settings, and sensibilities of the properties being utilized. Sure, it’s nice to have character skins based on beloved pop culture icons, but they’re basically cosplay or Halloween costumes. With “Project Hail Mary,” “Fortnite” is trying to bring the world of the film into the game, and that’s far more interesting than just adding some skins.
Throughout the history of “Fortnite,” the most memorable crossovers have been events that brought brand new modes into the game, like the Infinity Gauntlet mode that tied into “Avengers: Infinity War,” or the numerous “Star Wars” events they’ve done over the years. With a little luck, “Project Hail Mary” will join their ranks and become one of the most memorable “Fortnite” crossovers ever.
“Project Hail Mary” releases in theaters on March 20, and the movie-themed event will run in “Fortnite” from today, March 13, until March 27. The new content can be explored via these in-game codes: 8532-9413-6963 and 1897-9963-4956.
