Fishing: Central Coast anglers make modest gains at Shasta Lake

REDDING — Three of the four Central Coast entrants moved up in the standings on the second day of the FLW National Guard bass tournament at Shasta Lake.

Atascadero’s Gene Gray made the biggest advance, climbing into 41st place although his Thursday limit was a modest 21 ounces heavier than the day before. His total weight is 16 pounds, 11 ounces.

Gray needs to rank among the top 47 after Friday’s competition to assure being in the money. “I caught 25 fish Thursday with the heaviest being 2 1/2  pounds,” Gray said.

Co-Anglers (amateurs) Whitney Uyeda of Buellton and Ken Whalen of Lompoc had modest gains in their division. Uyeda’s limit actually was one ounce lighter but he moved up 13 places to 27th. Whalen’s two-day weight of 13 pounds enabled him to creep up two spots to 76th.

Pro Shawn Lee of Arroyo Grande slipped back 13 places to 127th in the 140-man competition. After day 2 his tourney weight is 12-4.

The amateurs wrap up competition today (Friday) while only the top five pros will advance to Saturday’s finals.
