Former Cal Poly slotback Cole Stanford was released by the New England Patriots on Saturday, a week after signing with the NFL franchise as an undrafted free agent.
Stanford was hoping to play in the Patriots’ preseason opener Thursday but instead heads into the open market once again. He previously tried out with the Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs.
Stanford was signed as a receiver by the Patriots after beating out eight others in a 10-man tryout for two roster spots last week. As a hybrid running back and receiver for Cal Poly, he had 43 catches for 891 yards and eight touchdowns for the Mustangs. He also racked up 314 rushing yards and another score on the ground.
