Patrick Angle and Austin Bricker sealed the match in their second doubles set as the Arroyo Grande High boys tennis team won 10-8 over Simi Valley on Wednesday in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.
Angle and Bricker won 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, 6-4, and singles players Clay Martinez, Andrew Arcangel and Greg Haydon all won two of three sets.
The Eagles will host San Clemente or travel to St. Margaret’s on Friday.
Walnut 16, Atascadero 2
Singles players Brendan Adams and Dean Menigoz each won a set for the Greyhounds (13-8) in a loss in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.
San Luis Obispo 3, Arroyo Grande 1
The Tigers scored three runs in the second inning on their way to victory over league champion Arroyo Grande (16-11, 12-2 PAC 8) in the third-place game of the PAC 8 Tournament.
Matt Mundorf went 4 for 4 with an RBI, and Tru Wells went 2 for 3 with a run in the win for San Luis Obispo.
Paso Robles 7, Atascadero 0
Mark Armstrong went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI, and Matt Keller had a double and a run for Paso Robles at the PAC 8 Tournament.
Bailey Gaither had a pair of singles and three runs. Nolan Binkele pitched 52⁄3 innings, allowing three hits and a walk with two strikeouts, and Jonathan Baldwin pitched 11⁄3 scoreless innings of relief for the Bearcats (22-5).
Holden Nix had a pair of singles, and Noah Gastelo had a double for Atascadero (11-16).
Pioneer Valley 1, Mission Prep 0
The Panthers outlasted Mission Prep (4-22-1) in a pitching duel in the PAC 8 Tournament.
Matt Bosshardt tossed six innings, striking out four while allowing two hits and a run for Mission Prep. Anthony Garcia pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Panthers, who scored the lone run in the second inning.
Hunter Losse broke up the no-hitter for Mission Prep with a single, and the Royals loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs but a popup ended the rally.
Morro Bay 10, Santa Ynez 6
Trailing by a run entering the top half of the seventh, Morro Bay (11-14-1, 8-6 Los Padres League) scored five runs in the seventh to take the lead.
A.J. Stulz had a solo home run to spark the rally and finished with three RBI.
Taylor Merrill was 4 for 5 with three RBI and two runs.
Templeton 13, Orcutt Academy 1
Katie Murphee went 4 for 5 with a run, a double and three RBI, and Kat Cline was 3 for 3 with two runs for Templeton (12-14, 8-6 LPL), which made the CIF-Southern Section playoffs for the first time in seven years.
Shaylyn Coy was 3 for 3 with two runs and pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
CIF-Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries
Nipomo’s Wyatt Marsalek qualified fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 45.69 seconds and teammate Austin Simpson was sixth in 4:46.92 to advance to the finals.
Simpson also was eighth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.87. The Morro Bay 200 freestyle relay team qualified 11th.
Qualifiers on the girls side include Alissa Mavin of Morro Bay in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley; Templeton’s Amanda Wilson in the 50 freestyle and teammate Sheridan Lee in the 500 freestyle in 5:29.69, and the Eagles’ 200 freestyle relay team.
