PREP ROUNDUP: Arroyo Grande dominates in doubles at PAC 8 tennis tourney

The Arroyo Grande High girls tennis team secured four out of eight spots in the semifinals of the PAC 8 tennis tournament in Arroyo Grande on Thursday.

No. 1 seed Sophie Whittle qualified in singles, while the doubles teams of Angelica Gagliano and Olivia Madison, Hannah Angle and Mary Waterman, and Melina Rodgers and Mekayla Lanall advanced.

The semifinals and finals are today.

Whittle didn’t drop a game in singles, playing Jane Clark of Mission Prep and Elizabeth Michniuk of Arroyo Grande.

Paso Robles’ Lindsey Horst advanced to play Whittle after beating Julianne Ortega of St. Joseph 6-0, 6-2, and Jenna Zakaria of San Luis Obispo 6-0, 6-2.

The other semifinal match pits Claire Bouquet of St. Joseph against Katie Hardisty of Righetti.

In doubles, Angle and Waterman defeated Charlotte Holt and Victoria Thek of Atascadero 7-6, 6-1, and Fiona Huffaker and Sam Good of San Luis Obispo 6-0, 6-1. The Arroyo Grande duo faces teammates and No. 1 seed Gagliano and Madison, who didn’t drop a game in their only match against Julia Clickard and Natalie Manier of Atascadero.

San Luis Obispo’s doubles team of Caroline Burke and Anna Lippold advances to play Landers and Rodgers.

Burke and Lippold beat Mellany Cunningham and Shawna Regan of Righetti 6-0, 6-3, and Katie Evenson and Krista Natividad of Paso Robles 6-0, 6-3.

Landers and Rodgers beat Kiahana Torres and Amy Newman of Atascadero 6-1, 6-0, and Maddy Handy and Nicole Kasper of San Luis Obispo 6-0, 6-2.


Team seasons end for Tigers and Titans

The San Luis Obispo girls golf team placed 13th and Nipomo 15th out of 19 teams at the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division team championships at the Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai.

The Tigers carded a team total of 474 at the par-72 course and were led by Neha Sikand, who shot an 83. Bee Soll shot a 91, Lisa Figueroa shot a 92, and Isabel Carpenter (99) and Avery Martin (109) rounded out San Luis Obispo’s team score.

Nipomo shot a 485, as Cynthia Navis shot a 79. The Titans’ other scorers were Brooke Cuzick (95), Erin Shusterich (99), Christine DeLaby (102) and Paige Johnson (110).

The top three teams advanced to the section championships, and the top 36 individuals moved on. Navis was four shots back of the cut line while Sikand was eight shots back.


Arroyo Grande 3, Atascadero 1

Ashlyn Herlihy had 22 kills and seven blocks to secure a 25-22, 25-16, 18-25, 25-16 win and the PAC 8 championship title for Arroyo Grande.

Alaina Hogeboom had 40 assists while Emily Sonny added 13 kills and eight blocks for the Eagles (23-3, 13-0).

Brooke Harbottle had 31 assists, and Sabrina Degnan had 28 digs for Atascadero (17-11, 6-3).

Katherine Sedley added 16 kills, Kaylie Griffin had eight kills, and Hanna Reece had eight blocks and four kills for the Greyhounds.

San Luis Obispo 3, St. Joseph 0

Sage Kelley had 25 assists to lead San Luis Obispo to a 25-11, 25-11, 25-16 win.

Callie Hamari had 19 digs, Sarah Maydole had seven kills, and Mia Abram had six kills for the Tigers (20-9, 10-3 PAC 8).

Mission Prep 3, Righetti 2

Jennifer Laird had 19 kills and four aces as the Royals came back twice to beat the Warriors 20-25, 18-25, 25-15, 25-18, 15-13.

After rallying to win the third and fourth set, Mission Prep trailing 9-6 in the fifth set but executed on offense down the stretch to complete the win.

Mission Prep coach Chuck Fox credited the win to a switch in the lineup after the second set that allowed them to take advantage of different matchups and force errors.

Bella Casola had 23 digs, and Eleri Perryman added 31 assists for the Royals (10-5, 8-5 PAC 8).

Paso Robles 3, Pioneer Valley 0

Hannah Katches had 11 kills and six digs, and Kayln Armstrong had nine kills and six blocks as the Bearcats won 26-24, 25-20, 26-24.

Coleen Wiest added 30 assists for Paso Robles (12-12, 4-9 PAC 8).

Morro Bay 3, Orcutt Academy 0

Sierra Emrick had 16 kills for Morro Bay to sweep Orcutt Academy 25-10, 25-19, 25-17.

Sybella Paredes added ten digs and seven aces for the Pirates (10-6, 9-4 Los Padres League).

North County Christian 3, Valley Christian Academy 0

Gabrielle Morrison had 22 assists, eight aces, and eight digs to dominate Valley Christian Academy in a 25-13, 25-11, 25-15 win.

Aliyah Morrison added 16 kills, and Madison Morrison added 10 kills and eight digs for the Crusaders (20-8, 10-1 Coast Valley League).

Coast Union 3, Maricopa 0

Sage Radecki had 28 assists and five digs to help lead Coast Union to a 25-8, 25-13, 25-8 victory.

Olivia Zamora had eight kills, Cameron MacTavish had seven kills, and Patty Bucio added six aces for the Broncos (12-4, 10-1 CVL).
