The Arroyo Grande High boys water polo team beat Redondo Beach 9-4 and Torrance 14-0 in its first two games at the El Segundo Tournament on Friday as Josh Smith combined for five goals over the two games.
In the first game against Redondo Beach, Smith had three goals, while Ryan Sverchek and Hunter Roberts had two goals each, and Ronan Paulson had four saves.
Against Torrance, Smith and Sverchek added two more goals each, while Ethan Klemowicv had two goals as well. Jarrod Swenson had five saves.
The Eagles play El Segundo in the quarterfinals today.
San Luis Obispo dropped its first game of the tournament to Trabuco Hills, losing 11-10.
Against Palos Verdes, the Tigers (14-4) won 14-11. Emerson Trout had five goals and Garrett Perkins added four more on the day. Connor Troy registered 21 saves, 13 of them in the Palos Verde match to preserve the win.
Dos Pueblos 10, Arroyo Grande 8
The doubles team of Hannah Angle and Mary Waterman won 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in a losing effort for the Eagles (16-4).
The tandem of Mekayla Landers and Melina Rodgers won 6-0, 2-6, 6-0. The doubles team of Olivia Madison and Angelica Gagliano won 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.
Nipomo at Rough Rider Invitational
Rogelio Flores covered the 5K course in 16 minutes, 38 seconds to place 18th in the boys small-school division and lead the Titans to a ninth-place finish out of 28 teams.
Taylor Witcher also placed 18th place in 20:07 as the girls finished seventh out of nine teams.
