Prep Roundup: Solid softball seasons end for Nipomo, Paso Robles

Nipomo High’s softball team saw a successful season end Monday with a 3-1 loss at Azusa in the wild-card round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 5 playoffs.

Hope Goodall pitched a four-hitter with no walks and five strikeouts for the Titans, who finished 16-13. She allowed only two earned runs.

“Hope pitched one of the best games of her season,” Nipomo coach Matt Paradis said.

Goodall also went 1 for 2 and scored Nipomo’s only run, when she came home on a sacrifice fly from Ashley Ruiz.

West Torrance 7, Paso Robles 3

Chloe Kerns went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, but the Bearcats (14-12) fell on the road in a Division 3 wild-card game.

Danielle Lambert had an RBI triple and drew two walks for Paso Robles, which also got an RBI single from M’Lynn Martin.


Divisional tournaments

Ventura and Oaks Christian were the two teams to advance from the Southern Section Central Coast Divisional tournament at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.

Ventura won with a 397 total, two strokes ahead of Oaks Christian.

San Luis Obispo posted a 412 team total, followed locally by Arroyo Grande (422) and Paso Robles (444).

In the Northern Divisional tourney at Ojai, Atascadero shot a team total of 433. Donnie Hedrick led the Greyhounds with an 81, and Ryan O’Connell carded 84.


Playoff pairings announced

PAC 7 champion Paso Robles and the other four playoff-bound county teams learned their opening-round opponents Monday, when the Southern Section unveiled its baseball brackets.

The Bearcats (19-6-2) will host a first-round game Thursday against the winner of the Division 2 wild-card game today between Yucaipa (17-7) and Etiwanda (12-12).

Arroyo Grande (15-12), which finished third in the PAC 7, hosts Rio Mesa (12-11) today in the Division 2 wild-card round.

Templeton (14-11), runner-up in the Los Padres League, opens the Division 5 playoffs with a first-round game at home Friday against La Puente (15-6). The team which won the LPL, Santa Ynez (24-1), is the top seed in the bracket and will host either El Monte or Valley Christian on Friday.

Coast Valley League champion Coast Union (16-4) hosts New Roads (9-7) on Friday in the first round of the Division 7 tournament. Coastal Christian (5-5) heads to Einstein Academy (9-9) for a wild-card game Wednesday.

All games are scheduled to begin at 3:15 p.m. unless both sides agree on a different start time.
