Prep Roundup: Atascadero takes second at own wrestling tournament

The Atascadero High wrestling team finished second Saturday at its annual New Year’s Revolution tournament behind team champion Chaparral of Parker, Colo.

Three Greyhounds went undefeated and won championships in their weight class — Carson Block (195 pounds), Nick Ducasse (160) and Ryan Lombardi (170). 

Also winning an individual title for Atascadero was Cruz Mendoza at 106 pounds. Mendoza beat a Chaparral wrestler in the finals after he lost to the same wrestler Friday. 

Tannan Soojian was Atascadero’s only second-place finisher. Soojian faced off against Morro Bay’s Chris Maez in the 

182-pound final, and Maez pinned Soojian in the second period. 

Maez was one of two Pirates who finished first. The other was Richard Beecham (152), who dominated Chaparral’s Aaron Try 7-0 in the finals. Joe Morris (106) finished fourth for Morro Bay. 

Nipomo finished fifth in the team standings, Morro Bay was 11th, and San Luis Obispo was 12th.


Arroyo Grande 4, Clovis 2

Hosanna Cassidy scored two goals to lead the Eagles past the Cougars. 

Josh Wilkins and Juan Jazo also scored for Arroyo Grande (6-3-2). 

Marco Figueroa and Danny Montero split time in goal, and both recorded four saves. 

San Luis Obispo 1, Bakersfield 0

Mo Morales scored 15 minutes into the match to give the Tigers the lead off a shot from Travis Caldwell-Young. 

Cameron Wright was in goal for San Luis Obispo (9-2-2) and had six saves.


Arroyo Grande 12, Ventura 7

Rebekah Hernandez, Brooklyn Vander Veen and Isabella Manuele each had three goals for the Eagles (5-3, 2-0 PAC 7).

Arroyo Grande goalie Alana Benson had five saves.
