Prep Roundup: Templeton girls suffer first loss

The Templeton High girls basketball team got 22 points and 18 rebounds from Mari Stewart, but the Eagles suffered their first loss of the season, 67-54, to Tulare Western Thursday evening at the Tulare Mid-Winter Invitational.

Templeton (6-1), which played games at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Thursday, led 14-13 after one quarter but was outscored 20-12 in the second. Autumn Russell had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Eagles.

Kayla Cota scored 19 points for Tulare Western, including five 3-pointers.

In the early game, Templeton defeated Merced 46-26. Stewart scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Paige O’Sullvan grabbed 12 boards to go along with two points.

The Eagles led by six heading into the fourth before outscoring Merced 18-7 in the final frame.

Santa Maria 45, Paso Robles 31

Jamika Martin scored a team-high seven points for the Bearcats (0-8) in the opening round of the Harold Oliveira Holiday Classic at Righetti High. Gwen Lundy, Kailey Warren and Kristen Thompson each scored five.

Paso Robles trailed 22-18 at halftime but was outscored by five in each of the last two quarters.

The Bearcats next face Santa Ynez today at 6 p.m.

Pioneer Valley 62, Nipomo 20

Taylor Nevitt had a team-high six points and nine blocks in the loss for the Titans (2-7) at Righetti.

Nipomo plays Cabrillo today at 10:30 a.m. and Atascadero at 4:30 p.m.

Contra Costa Christian 47, Coastal Christian 27

Amy Arnold had 16 points and 14 rebounds in the loss for the Conquerors (1-5) at the Valley Christian Academy Holiday I-Charge Tournament.

Roni Garrison recorded 20 rebounds to go along with nine points and five blocks for Coastal Christian, which plays Crossroads today at 1 p.m.

Kristine Brown scored a game-high 19 points for Contra Costa.

Mission Prep 49, Central Valley Chr. 36

The Royals (4-5) led 12-1 after the first quarter and cruised to victory at the Avalon Invitational Tournament.

I’raya Smith scored a team-high 14 points for Mission Prep, and Dolores Neal had 10. The Royals led 21-18 at halftime and 37-28 after three quarters.


Atascadero 59, Roseville 52

Kevin Woodard scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Greyhounds in the opening round of the Atascadero Holiday Tournament. The Greyhounds (8-2) trailed 29-26 at halftime and 50-44 entering the fourth. 

Robbie Berwick chipped in 14 points and five assists.

Atascadero will play Montclair tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Also in the Atascadero Holiday Tournament, San Francisco’s University defeated Paso Robles 70-46. The Bearcats (7-3) will play Templeton (2-7) today at 2:30 p.m. The Eagles lost 60-58 to Pioneer Valley. Montclair defeated Nipomo, 67-35.

Coast Union 50, Morro Bay 44

Quinten Raethke scored a team-high 14 points to help Coast Union hold off Morro Bay, 50-44, in the opening round of the Coast Union Invitational.

Angel Avina had eight points and nine rebounds for the Broncos (6-4), who outscored the Pirates 17-11 in the fourth quarter after the teams were tied 33-33 after three.

Solomon Ruddell posted a game-high 18 points for Morro Bay (0-12). 

Coast Union plays Caruthers today at noon, and Morro Bay faces Immanuel at 3 p.m.

Mission Prep 69, Las Vegas Sierra Vista 59

The Royals overcame an eight-point halftime deficit at the MaxPreps Holiday Classic.

Brandon Jones led the way with 21 points for the Royals (7-3), who scored 32 points in the third quarter. Quinton Adlesh chipped in 19 points.

Las Vegas 76, Arroyo Grande 59

The Eagles lost to tournament host Las Vegas High at the Las Vegas Prep Championship. Cobe Williams scored 21 points in the loss, and Carson Wack had 10 for the Eagles (7-4).
