The Cal Poly baseball team opened up a three-game series at UC Irvine with a 7-1 loss Friday night, getting outhit by the Anteaters 14-4.
UC Irvine got to Mustangs starter Joey Wagman early and often, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning and tagging him with six runs on 12 hits over 61⁄3 innings in the loss. Wagman’s record drops to 10-3 on the year.
Andrew Thurman (5-3) pitched a complete game in the win for the Anteaters, allowing just one run on back-to-back doubles by Jimmy Allen and David Armendariz in the second inning.
Nick Torres was the only Cal Poly hitter with multiple hits, going 2 for 3 with a double for the Mustangs. No other Cal Poly players reached base in the game.

Taylor Sparks, Connor Spencer and Scott Gottschling had two RBI each for UC Irvine. Sparks finished 3 for 5 with a triple, a home run and two runs scored, Spencer was 1 for 4 with two runs scored and a stolen base and Gottschling was 2 for 4 with a double.
Denver Chavez, Jordan Ellis and Brian Mundell, the No. 1-3 hitters for the Mustangs, each went 0 for 4 on the night.
With the loss, Cal Poly fell into a tie for fourth place with UC Santa Barbara in the Big West, both 11-8 and only one game ahead of sixth-place Long Beach State. The Mustangs are 32-15 overall while UC Irvine, alone in third place, is 30-15 and 12-7.
The second game of the series is today at 1 p.m. Left-hander Matt Imhoff (4-3, 2.34 ERA) will get the start for the Mustangs.
