A dramatic run through the playoffs for the Arroyo Grande High boys basketball team ended Tuesday when the Eagles fell to No. 2-seeded Redondo Union 55-41 in the semifinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 2A playoffs.
The Eagles advanced to the semis after point guard Matt Willkomm hit a buzzer beater in a 53-51 quarterfinal win over Canyon on Friday.
Willkomm again led his team, scoring 14 points to go with four rebounds and four assists, but it wasn’t enough to get past an imposing Sea Hawks team.
“Effort wise, it was what we always get from our kids,” Arroyo Grande coach Ryan Glanville said. “It was outstanding. But they were a little bit too big, a little bit to fast and a little bit too strong for us tonight.

“They had a lot of size and they had a lot of pressure on the ball. As the game wore on, they kinda wore us down and their size affected us.”
The Eagles weathered a 7-0 run from Redondo Union to start the game and led
13-11 after the first quarter. But a 16-7 run for the Sea Hawks before halftime gave them all the separation they needed.
“Willkomm did a really good job,” Glanville said. “He had to deal with a lot of the pressure. They had him scouted, trying to deny him the ball all over the floor.”
Cobe Williams had eight points and four assists, Andrew Midyett had six points and Brennan Rivera had four points, seven rebounds and four assists for Arroyo Grande.
The Eagles finish the season at 21-9 after finishing fourth in the PAC 7 standings and earning a No. 11 seed in the postseason.
Ian Fox led Redondo Union with 16 points, and Derek Baile added 15 for the Sea Hawks, who advance to the championship game Saturday, where they will face top-seeded Westlake.
