Mission Prep’s Connor Woolpert outdueled Paso Robles High’s Jaylon Davis as the Royals beat the Bearcats 82-63 Thursday night in a first round boys basketball game of the Optimist Tournament, hosted by Arroyo Grande.
Woolpert had a double-double with a game-high 33 points, including eight 3-pointers, and collected 10 rebounds. Quinton Adlesh had 21 points and six assists for Mission Prep (2-0). The Royals made 16 3-pointers.
The Royals held off the Bearcats despite Paso Robles (1-5) having 24 more free-throw attempts. Mission Prep had 30 fouls, compared to 14 for Paso Robles. The Bearcats were 23 for 37 at the free-throw line.
Davis led the Bearcats with 30 points, including six 3-pointers and Andy Binkele added 15.
Elsewhere, Matt Willkomm had 30 points and six assists to lead Arroyo Grande to a 83-61 win against Hoover. Brennan Rivera had 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Cobe Williams had 18 points and six assists for the Eagles.
Thousand Oaks defeated Atascadero 56-49 and Clovis North beat Nipomo 87-38. Freddy Ruiz had 30 points for the Titans.
Coast Union Tournament
Andy Garrettson had 20 points for Templeton in its 61-34 win over King City in the Coast Union Tournament.
Aidan Sarbeck had eight points and 12 rebounds, and Clark Burton had nine points and five assists for the Eagles (2-1).
Templeton plays San Marcos today at 6 p.m. at Coast Union.
Also at the tournament, Quinten Raethke had 12 points for Coast Union in its 80-40 loss to the Saints.
Angel Avina scored nine for the Broncos (2-3), and Allan Hernandez added eight.
JP Simmons led Santa Maria with 19 points. Devon Brock scored 14 for the Saints, and Chilied Pabellan and Shemarr Parker added 10 apiece.
In another game, Noah Martinez scored six points for Morro Bay (3-3) in its 86-23 loss to Stockdale
Arroyo Grande 2, Cabrillo 1
Raul Munoz scored for the visiting Eagles (5-3) with eight minutes left off a Oscar Munoz assist by Oscar Munoz to tie it. In the 75th minute, Christian
Merino scored an unassisted goal for Arroyo Grande’s first comeback win of the year.
Aaron Friedman made five saves in goal.
Paso Robles 2, Coast Union 2, tie
Rafael Roman scored unassisted, and Felipe Aguilar had a goal with an assist from Matthew Mihelic for Paso Robles.
Paso Robles goalie Juan Carlos Ruiz had six saves.
San Luis Obispo 1, Santa Ynez 1, tie
Lukas Holocher scored for the Tigers off an assist from Peter Delkeskamp as they tied the Pirates in Santa Ynez.
Goalkeeper Michael Lamberg had six saves, including a save on a penalty kick for San Luis Obispo (4-2-2).
Nipomo 5, Mission Prep 0
Caleb Doane had two goals and one assist for the Titans in their win.
Ben Jimenez had a goal and two assists, and Aaron Robles had a goal and an assist for Nipomo.
Goalie Johann Ayala had three saves for the Titans (4-2-2).
Morro Bay 2, St. Joseph 0
Shawn Pacaoan and Chad Porter scored goals off their own rebounded shots, and the Pirates (4-2-1) won a nonleague match with five starters missing with injuries to continue their winning start to the season.
“We feel very good mentally,” Morro Bay coach Andrew Wilke said. “The kids are excited this year, and we’re putting into games what we do in practice, and that’s very exciting.”
Pacaoan scored unassisted on a breakaway, and Holt Alden set up Porter for a header in the box for the other Morro Bay goal. Porter’s first shot was deflected by the Knights’ keeper,
Wilke said, before his second header snuck in.
Morro Bay keeper Jeremy Neilson had four saves.
Pioneer Valley 3, Templeton 0
Goalkeeper Tyrus Yamagata had six saves for the Eagles (1-2-2) in their loss.

Elizabeth Hardy had three goals and two assists to lead the Eagles (3-0-1) in their win against the Conquistadores.

The Tigers overcame a 1-0 deficit at halftime to defeat the at home.
Brady Candaele scored twice for San Luis Obispo off assists from Kelsey Harper and Lauren Hutkin.
Darla Berkefeld added a goal for the Tigers off an assist from Sydney Knauer.
Lily McCann had five saves in goal for San Luis Obispo (3-1).

Julia Mora had four goals for the Greyhounds as they defeated the Pirates at home.
Rachel Gruetzmacher and Emily Ferree both scored three goals, and Hanna Livengood and Mahreya Kelly scored twice for Atascadero. Five other players each scored one.
Courtney McCarthy had 10 saves in goal for the Greyhounds, and Lauren Giggy had seven.
Santa Ynez 12, San Luis Obispo 5
Lauren Biggs scored two goals for the Tigers (3-6), but they lost to Santa Ynez on the road.
San Luis Obispo’s Emma Tietje, Carly Stevenson and Gwen Wensloff also scored for the Tigers.

Kelsey Docouto had three goals for the Eagles, who fell to Mira Costa.
