Prep Roundup: Thoreson leads San Luis Obispo boys basketball team to win over Morro Bay

The San Luis Obispo High boys basketball team took an early lead and held on for an 80-53 road victory over Morro Bay on Tuesday night.

The Tigers (3-2) led 22-15 after the first quarter and by 24 points at halftime.

San Luis Obispo’s David Thoreson scored a game high 25 points and made five 3-pointers. Blake Shapazian added 24 points, and Kwab Farkye had 10 for San Luis Obispo.

Frank Molina and Luke Munds each scored 12 points to lead the Pirates. Nick Tovar scored 10 for Morro Bay (3-2).

Arroyo Grande 68, Nipomo 26

Cobe Williams had 15 points and five assists as the Eagles (5-1) used a high-scoring first half to cruise past the Titans.

Andrew Midyet scored 13 points, Dylan Brigham had 10 and Matt Willkomm added seven points and eight assists for Arroyo Grande, which led 40-16 at halftime and 

59-23 after three quarters.

Kaileb Mendez had eight points and Freddy Ruiz added seven for Nipomo.

Templeton 65, Soledad 51

Alex Elterman scored 16 points, Andy Garrettson added 14, and the Eagles (1-1) overcame an off night at the free-throw line to defeat the visiting Aztecs.

Jackson Wheeler had 14 points and six assists and Aidan Sarbeck had nine points and seven rebounds for Templeton, which shot 12 for 27 from the free- throw line in the win.


Arroyo Grande 34, Nipomo 24

The Eagles (3-2) downed the Titans (1-4) with 10 points and four steals from Elizabeth Mero.

Olivia Galindo had seven points and four steals for Arroyo Grande, Krista St. Denis had eight steals and Ashlyn Herlihy added 10 rebounds for the Eagles.

Diana Krichebsky led Nipomo with nine points.


San Luis Obispo 1, Lompoc 0

Alex Maier scored an unassisted goal to lift the Tigers (4-2-1) past the Braves.

Michael Lambert had five saves in goal for San Luis Obispo.

Santa Ynez 3, Arroyo Grande 1

Alexander Tseegai scored for the Eagles off an assist from Nicholas Valverde for their only goal in the nonleague loss.

Goalkeeper Aaron Friedman had three saves for Arroyo Grande (4-3).

Morro Bay 1, Atascadero 1, tie

Holt Alden scored the lone Pirates goal early in the first half, but the Greyhounds answered in the second half to earn a draw.

Goalies Oscar Loeza and Jeremy Neilson had three saves apiece for Morro Bay (3-2-1).

No further Atascadero information was provided to The Tribune.

Nipomo 3, St. Joseph 0

Mike Arevalo scored off an Efrain Navaro assist for the Titans (3-2-2) as they defeated the Knights in Santa Maria.

Nipomo’s Aaron Robles and Francisco Ceja each scored in the second half on assists from Ben Jimenez.

Templeton 1, Righetti 1, tie

Tyrus Yamagata had five saves in goal, and Austin Alscon scored the only Eagles goal as Templeton tied on the road.

Coast Union 6, Mission Prep 1

Victor Casas scored five goals to lead the Broncos (4-1) past the Royals (0-6-1). 

Michel Gonzales had the other goal for Coast Union.

Jack Mooney scored on a free kick for the Royals, and goalies Peter Bertlesen and Justin McKeague had three saves apiece for Mission Prep.


San Luis Obispo 3, Lompoc 1

The Tigers (2-1) beat the Braves with goals from Brady Candaele, Katrina Drake and Darla Berkefeld.

Kelsey Shetler and Kelsey Harper each had an assist

Arroyo Grande 1, Santa Ynez 1, tie

The Eagles (2-1) tied the Pirates with a goal from Elizabeth Heyde, which was assisted by Mallory Flatebo.

Goalies Sarah Doughty and Kendall Bowers had a combined four saves in goal for Arroyo Grande. 

Atascadero 3, Morro Bay 0

The Greyhounds (2-1) scored twice in the final four minutes to blow open a close game. 

Maia Mumford, Bryna Frace and Rachel Andrade all scored for Atascadero. Sara Seay had seven saves in goal, and Emily Johnson had six for the Greyhounds.

Madelynn Martinez had 13 saves in goal for Morro Bay (0-3). 

St. Joseph 2, Nipomo 1

Maricruz Arevalo had the only Titans goal off an assist from Denise Belmontes in the loss to the Knights (3-0).

Yocelyn Lopez had 13 saves in goal for Nipomo (0-3).

Mission Prep 1, Coast Union 0

The Broncos fell to 0-3. No further information was provided to The Tribune.


Cabrillo 15, San Luis Obispo 8

Andrea Reynolds was the leading goal scorer for the Tigers (3-5) with two goals in the win over the Conquistadors.

Goalie Anna Mullen had 18 saves for San Luis Obispo.

Paso Robles 12, Nipomo 5

Kylie Pugh scored four goals to lead the Bearcats to a home victory.

Shannon Rees and Heather McDonnell scored two goals apiece for Paso Robles (6-2).

Bearcats goalkeeper Marti Rae Grois had eight saves.
