A Coast Union High School freshman linebacker has been named to the All-CIF-Southern Section team for Division 1 in eight-man football.
Lane Sutherland, who played middle linebacker and running back for the Broncos, was one of 14 players named to the defensive team.
His coach, Chuck Garcia Jr., called Sutherland the “backbone of the defense” in his first year of high school football.
Sutherland registered more than 100 tackles, returned two interceptions for touchdowns, and recovered five fumbles, Garcia said.

The Broncos finished the season 7-3 and 2-2 in the Condor League, and lost to Nuview Bridge in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.
Playing both sides of the ball, Sutherland, who stands 5-feet-11 inches and weighs 185 pounds, also helped his team by scoring three times as a running back.
“He was outstanding,” Garcia Jr. said. “He never came off the field all year long. He’s one of those guys who helps the team in so many ways.”
Sutherland was the only player of the All-CIF-Southern Section team who wasn’t a junior or a senior.
Garcia said Sutherland also excels on the baseball field. He will be a catcher this season on the Coast Union baseball team.
Sutherland was one of four Condor League players named to the All-CIF defensive team. Three Condor League offensive players were honored.
