Prep Roundup: Morro Bay routs San Luis Obispo in girls basketball

The Morro Bay High girls basketball team defeated San Luis Obispo 51-18 in the season opener for both teams  Tuesday night.

 Hannah Gilbert had a team-high 20 points for the Pirates, and teammate Sierra Schwellenbach had 19. Gilbert also had 12 rebounds and blocked four shots, and Schwellenbach had two 3-point goals and seven steals. 

“We flowed very well offensively and played solid defense,” Morro Bay coach Cary Nerelli said. “There is lots of room for improvement in execution, but this game was a good way to start the season.” 

Templeton 56, Paso Robles 45

Mari Stewart had 22 points, 14 rebounds and seven steals to help rally the Eagles from a 17-13 deficit after the first quarter in the season opener for both teams.

Megan Hattar added 17 points, Marissa Torres had nine, and Autumn Russell had three points, 10 rebounds and five steals.

Templeton, leading 38-35 entering the fourth quarter, outscored the Bearcats 18-10 in the final frame to pull away late.

Molly Donovan scored 23 points to pace Paso Robles, and Jamica Martin added 11.


Paso Robles 30, Templeton 28

The Bearcats never trailed in a season-opening win over the Eagles.

Rudy Binkele scored nine points, and Jaylon Davis and Josh Oliver both scored seven for Paso Robles.

Oliver also had 15 rebounds, and Jason Germain added 11 for the Bearcats.

Templeton’s leading scorer was Andy Garretson with 10 points. Matt Jarbini added seven for the Eagles. 


Atascadero 3, Coast Union 2

Brynn Guzman had two goals, and Cassy Craker had one to lead the Greyhounds to a victory against the Broncos in the season opener for both teams. 

Cristina Plascencia scored on an assist from Remy Corbet, and Morgan May scored on a free kick for Coast Union. 

Arroyo Grande 6, Templeton 0

Nadine Reed had two goals and Mallory Flatebo, Kiana Parker, Elizabeth Heyde and Christina Lang each had one for Arroyo Grande in its win against Templeton.

Chloe Buschong had seven saves for Templeton.

Paso Robles 3, Nipomo 2

The Bearcats scored three first-half goals and held off a late Titans rally.

Maricruz Arvalo and Denise Belmontes each scored a goal for Nipomo (0-1), and Titan goalkeeper Yocelyn Lopez had eight saves. No Paso Robles information was provided to The Tribune.

Cabrillo 1, San Luis Obispo 0

The Conquistadors beat the Tigers (0-1) on a first-half goal.

Mission Prep 4, Morro Bay 0

Sydney Rathjens scored a hat trick to lead the Royals (2-0) to a victory over the Pirates (0-1).

Madison Morley, Sammi Fernandez and Kendra McKeague all had assists on Rathjens’ goals.

Fernandez also contributed a goal for Mission Prep.

Royals goalie Grace Oeser had six saves, and Madelynn Martinez had four saves for Morro Bay.


Arroyo Grande 4, Templeton 0

Oscar Munoz had two goals for  Arroyo Grande in its season opener.

In the first half, Arroyo Grande’s Macho Hernandez scored off a Ron Jazo assists. 

Arroyo Grande scored three unanswered goals in the second half — two from Oscar Munoz and one by Adrian Alvarado with assists from Raul Munoz and Ernesto Leon, respectively.

Templeton (1-1) keeper Tyrus Yamagata had three saves.

Atascadero 3, Coast Union 1

Eduardo Zandrano scored two first-half goals to lead the Greyhounds past Coast Union in their season debut.

Patrick Hammer added a second-half goal off a Bryan Kirkpatrick assist.

David Hernandez had six saves in goal for Atascadero. 

Nipomo 2, Paso Robles 1

Goalkeeper Johann Ayala had five saves to lead the Titans (1-0) to a victory against the Bearcats.

Paso Robles led 1-0 at halftime on a Daniel Viramontes goal. 

The Titans came back in the second half with goals by Jonathan Gomez off an assist from Ben Jimenez, and another by Aaron Robles.

Morro Bay 5, Mission Prep 0

Holt Alden had three goals, Jackson Chavez and Carlos Moreno had one apiece, and the Pirates shut out the Royals in their season opener.

Joel Wilkie had two assists, and Daniel Abiatti and Conner Stratton both had one for Morro Bay.

Oscar Loeza had seven saves in goal for the Pirates.


Paso Robles 22, Santa Maria 1

Twelve different players scored for the Bearcats in their season opener.

Rebecca Tobey and Shannon Rees each had three goals, Kylie Pugh, Michaela Iunker, Heather McDonnell, Lauren Fowerby, Nicole Steingruber and Marti Rae Grois had two apiece and Bailee Magnuson, Alexis Lewis, Erika Smeltzer and Zoe Zepp each had one for Paso Robles.

Marti Rae Grois had six saves during her three quarters in goal, and Shannon Rees added three saves for the Bearcats.
