Patrick Laird had three touchdown runs Friday in leading Mission Prep’s football team to a 49-14 win over Flintridge Prep in the quarterfinals of the Northeast Division of the CIF-Southern Section football playoffs in La Cañada.
The Royals (10-1) came out quickly with Laird scoring their first touchdown less than four minutes into the game. Laird had 11 carries for 178 yards.
Leading 7-0 after one period, Mission Prep scored 21 points in both the second and third quarters to pull away.
“We played a solid game over all,” Mission Prep coach Chad Henry said. “We had a lot of guys involved offensively and defensively. We played a great team game. We ran the ball very well and kept the defense off balance.”
Quarterback Tyler Baty threw for 179 yards and had a 22-yard touchdown run. Joey Hall, Michael Cardwell and Anthony Aurignac all contributed a touchdown for the Royals as well.
Henry said Mission Prep is excited about the opportunity to play this late in the season and have a semifinal game next week. The Royals’ football team has not made it this far in the Southern Section playoffs since 1962.
“This team has grown, especially through the last two to three weeks of the season,” Henry said. “The team is starting to mature and believe they can be a championship team.
“The guys became more and more focused on taking advantage of the opportunity they have.”
