Prep roundup: SLO High cross country runners have strong showing at Ojai meet

Olivia Carmo was the individual winner to lead an impressive showing from the San Luis Obispo High girls cross country team at the Ojai Invitational on Saturday at Lake Casitas.

Carmo, one of four Tigers girls in the top 20, completed the 5K course in 19 minutes, 27 seconds.

Malea Martin placed 11th (21:02), Kelsey Harper placed 15th (21:18) and Emma Phillips placed 16th (21:21) for San Luis Obispo.

Also in the girls race, Nipomo’s Kyra Meko was fifth (20:29), Atascadero’s Miriam Orozco placed 10th (21:00), Nipomo’s Grace Albano was 12th (21:10) and Atascadero’s and Jillian McLenithan placed 17th (21:23).

In the boys race, Josh Ernst placed second for the Tigers in 16:20. Jeremy Costello finished 17th (17:23) for San Luis Obispo.

Also in the boys race, Morro Bay’s Austin Lay was third (16:38), Atascadero’s Daniel Reyes was fifth (16:53) and teammate Travis Hallett was 15th (17:21) and Nipomo’s Alex Hascall was 18th (17:23).

GIRLS TENNISArroyo Grande at Valencia Fall Brawl

Sophie Whittle won four straight sets to win the singles tournament.

Whittle, the No. 1 seed, won 8-0 in her first two matches of the day.

In the semifinals, she defeated Proyfan Lohaphainan of Hart 8-5 to advance to the championship, where she defeated the No. 2 seed Jackie Resler, also of Hart, 8-4.

Lauren Hayashi won 8-0 before falling to Resler 8-5 in the second round.

Two doubles teams won one set before losing in the second round for the Eagles.

BOYS WATER POLOMorro Bay at Pioneer Valley Tournament

The Pirates (5-2) went 2-1 on the day to place second in Santa Maria.

Morro Bay opened with a 7-3 victory over Nipomo, the team’s first ever win over the Titans. Grant Johnson and Connor Rose had two goals each for the Pirates.

Morro Bay then fell 11-7 to eventual champion Villanova Prep.

Marco Maffiolo had three goals for the Pirates, who trailed 4-2 at half but couldn’t close the gap.Morro Bay then turned it around with a 10-4 victory over St. Joseph behind four goals from Rose and three from Johnson.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALLCoast Union Tournament

St. Joseph won the tournament, going 8-1 behind Shannon Swaim, who was named the MVP.

Templeton placed second, going 6-3, including a 25-18 win over Morro Bay and a 25-19 win over Reedley. The Eagles fell 25-20 to St. Joseph for the championship.

Heather Fields was named to the all-tournament team for Templeton. Fields had 45 kills on the day.Morro Bay placed fourth.

FOOTBALLCoast Union 68, Pacific Lutheran 15

The Broncos led 41-8 after the first quarter against a team that hadn’t allowed a point in its first two games of the season.

Coast Union quarterback Nolan Baldwin ran for 137 yards and five touchdowns on 13 carries. Alex Bautista led the Broncos (3-0) with 160 rushing yards on 20 carries and had one touchdown. Austin Eive also ran for two touchdowns as Coast Union piled up 350 rushing yards and 400 yards of total offense.

The Outlaws won their nonleague game to improve to 2-0.
