Atascadero rallies for football win over Santa Barbara

The Atascadero High football team scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to overcome an 11-point deficit Friday night, rallying for a 35-31 nonleague win over Santa Barbara on the road.

The game was deadlocked at 7 after the first quarter and 14 at halftime, but the Dons took a 28-20 lead over the Greyhounds (2-1) after three quarters.

After a field goal put Santa Barbara up 31-20 early in the fourth, Atascadero quarterback Robbie Berwick answered with an 11-yard touchdown run to close the gap. Jonathon Torres ran for a successful two-point conversion, and the Greyhounds trailed 31-28 with just over six minutes remaining in the game.

Santa Barbara was forced to punt on the ensuing possession, and after a big run from Torres, Berwick connected on a 59-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Chance to give Atascadero the 35-31 lead.

After the Greyhounds sacked the Dons quarterback on fourth down at the Santa Barbara 4-yard line with 1:55 left, Atascadero took possession and ran out the clock.

Berwick finished 3 for 6 in air for 94 yards and one touchdown, and Torres had 153 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries for the Greyhounds.
