Garcia leads Paso Robles wrestling to 5th in Reno

The Paso Robles High wresting team placed fifth overall at the Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno, Nev., Thursday behind a dominant performance from Kevan Garcia.

Garcia, wrestling at 145 pounds, placed third in the final standings.

In the quarterfinals, Garcia lost to Joey LeValee (Reno High, Reno, Nev.), ranked No. 2 in the country according to Paso Robles assistant coach Matt Monteiro. After the loss, Garcia rallied and won four straight, defeating three wrestlers ranked in the top 20 in California, twice by pin and once by major decision. Garcia finished with a 9-1 record in the tournament.

Robbie Stanley (113 pounds) won in the quarterfinals for the Bearcats, but lost three straight to end the day finishing in seventh place with a 7-3 record.

In his fifth-place match, Deonte Willis (220) lost 6-5, falling one spot short of placing.

Jimmy Pacheco (195, 6-2 tournament record) and Colton Madrigal (170, 6-2) both lost in the round of 12, falling one win shy of placing.Freshman Trevor Torres finished 5-2, falling in the round of 16.

“It was a great tournament,” Monteiro said. “This was the first tournament we had all our wrestlers healthy and at weight, so we finally got a chance to show everyone what we can do.

“We have some more work to do, but we are very exited about this and for the rest of the season.”


GIRLS BASKETBALLAt Stockdale Tournament

Templeton (11-3) defeated Garces 52-37 to pick up its third victory of the tournament.

Mari Stewart had 16 points and 18 rebounds, Lauren Stuedemann had 12 points and seven assists and Autumn Russell grabbed 10 rebounds to go with her seven points for the Eagles.

At Righetti Tournament

Atascadero (7-5) defeated Paso Robles 61-25 in their final game of the tournament, giving the Greyhounds a third-place finish.

Emily Boege had 25 points to lead Atascadero, including 21 from behind the 3-point line. Casey Nero added 14 points and Mary Kate Evans added eight for the Greyhounds.

At SoCal Holiday Preps Classic

Mission Prep jumped out to a 26-12 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, defeating Rancho Bernardo 68-51 in the semifinals.

Kaylee Williams had a team-high 18 points for the Royals (11-1) and Jenna Dunbar added 14.Mission Prep will play in the championship today at 5 p.m.

BOYS SOCCERBuena High Tournament

Paso Robles settled for a pair of 1-1 ties against host Buena and Rio Mesa.

In the first game against Buena, Angel Guevara scored on an assist from Angel Garcia. In the second game against Rio Mesa, Matt Mihelic had an unassisted goal to help the Bearcats finish the day with a 6-0-5 overall. Jesus Gil, who was the Paso Robles goalkeeper for both games, finished with 13 saves.

Paso Robles will play in the tournament again today, as the Bearcats will face Camarillo at 11:30 a.m.
