Arroyo Grande boys basketball opens with win at Orange Holiday Classic

Big man Brent VanderVeen pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out six assists to go along with his 14 points to lead the Arroyo Grande High boys basketball team to a 52-36 win over Huntington Beach on Monday in the first round of the Orange Holiday Classic.

Brennan Rivera had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Eagles.

The Eagles maintained control after taking an 11-6 first-quarter lead before exploding for a 20-8 second quarter and a 31-14 halftime advantage. It was enough to hold on despite a slow third quarter, in which the Eagles outscored Huntington Beach 9-8.

Arroyo Grande will continue its Orange Holiday Classic run today with an 8:30 p.m. game against Orange Lutheran, which beat Westminster 43-33 on Monday in a first-round game.
