Morro Bay High takes third place at Santa Barbara Tournament

The Morro Bay High girls basketball team defeated Oak Park 42-40 on Friday, placing third overall at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

Sierra Schwellenbach and Nicki Bloom scored 12 points each for the Pirates, who improved their record to 8-3 with the win over a team Pirates coach Cary Nerelli said is the No. 3-ranked team in CIF-Southern Section Division 3A.

Hannah Gilbert had 11 points and 15 rebounds, and Nikki Machado added nine points for Morro Bay.

Arroyo Grande lost its game to Royal, 59-56. The Eagles (7-4) held a 43-38 lead entering the fourth quarter, but were outscored 21-13 the rest of the way. With the loss, Arroyo Grande finished in eighth place in the Gold Division bracket.

Heather Madrigal scored 24 points, and Lindsey Wolf added 14 for the Eagles.

Nipomo lost 40-39 on a desperation buzzer-beater by San Marcos’ Hope Morrison, who finished with a game-high 14 points.

Tess Latimer matched Morrison’s 14 points, and Peyton Maas added 11 for the Titans (1-15), who were without three injured starters for the tournament.
