Bloom leads Morro Bay girls to basketball win over San Luis Obispo

The Morro Bay High girls basketball team powered past the San Luis Obispo Tigers 56-21 in both teams’ season opener Tuesday.

The Pirates allowed just seven points through one half, and never gave up double figures in any quarter.

Nicki Bloom led the Pirates (1-0) with 20 points, while Hannah Gilbert was close behind with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Jessica Judge led San Luis Obispo with nine points.

Paso Robles 48, Templeton 43

Molly Donovan scored 21 points to fuel the Bearcats to a season-opening victory over the Eagles. She was the only Bearcat to score in double figures.

Lauren Stuedemann scored 14, and Mari Stewart scored 10 for Templeton, which was outscored 16-8 in the fourth quarter.

Mission Prep 68, Santa Maria 28

Bri Harvey led the Royals with 17 points and six rebounds, and Mission Prep defeated Santa Maria in its season opener.

The Royals (1-0) held a 33-12 lead at the half and never looked back. Jenna Dunbar also added 13 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Santa Marcos 65, Arroyo Grande 47

Arroyo Grande’s Jackson Zimmerman had 17 points with four 3-pointers, Gunnar Gomez scored 15 points with four 3-pointers, but the Eagles lost to Santa Marcos in their season opener.

The game was fairly close until the third quarter when Arroyo Grande only scored four points.

Mission Prep 68, Santa Maria 40

The Royals overcame their eight-point start in the first quarter to post 54 points through the next two and defeat the Saints by 28.

Connor Woolpert led the Royals with 20 points, while Cal Poly signee Zach Allmon scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Quinton Adlesh also scored 11 for the Royals (2-0).

Laguna Blanca 44, Coast Union 25

The Broncos watched a 20-15 deficit swell to a 19-point loss.

Coast Union was outscored 19-4 in the third quarter, and then posted six in the fourth.

BOYS SOCCER

San Luis Obispo 2, Nipomo 2, tie

The Tigers and the Titans scored all four goals in the second half en route to a nonleague tie in the season opener for both teams.

San Luis Obispo’s Trevor James scored off an assist by Matt Connely, while Travis Caldwell also scored for the Tigers off an assist by James.

Buddy Kichler scored for Nipomo off an assist from Jonathan Gomez. The Titans’ Caleb Perez scored with an assist by Gomez as well.

Nipomo goalie Erubey Ponce had 20 saves.

Santa Maria 3, Arroyo Grande 1

The Eagles lost their season opener. Their only goal came from Angel Rodriguez in the 36th minute.

Arroyo Grande goalie Alex Montero had four saves.

Morro Bay 2, Atascadero 1

The Pirates beat the Greyhounds in their first game of the season.

Atascadero’s Robert Orosco scored with an assist by David Rameriez.

GIRLS SOCCER

Arroyo Grande 11, Santa Maria 0

In their first game of the season, the Eagles (1-0) dominated.

Roxy Harmon and Lupita Leon both scored two goals for Arroyo Grande. Freshman Jane Summers scored a goal and had three assists.

Kina Lang, Mallory Slatebo, and Nadine Reed each scored one goal and each had one assist.

Laura Greene, Yezinia Romero and Carly Chandless also scored.

San Luis Obispo 2, Nipomo 0

Brady Candaele scored both goals for the Tigers, one assisted by Mariah Niedez and the second unassisted in the season opener for both teams. San Luis Obispo goalie Lauren Harper had four saves for the shutout.

Paso Robles 3, Templeton 2

The Bearcats’ Emilee Brown scored off an assist by Jessica Mihilec, and Alyssa Harris scored off an assist by Hanna Paul for Paso Robles in its season opener.

Paso Robles goalie Carly McCall had two saves and Kelsey Vahum had three.

Atascadero 6, Morro Bay 0

After a slow start, the Greyhounds scored five goals in the second half for the season-opening win.

Olivia Dobbs led with two goals, and teammates Christine Curtis, Rhiannon Dudley, Rachel Audrade and Dominique Mack each had a goal.

“It was a good first game,” Atascadero coach Sam McMillian said, “We’re just going to continue to work together this whole month of December and to get our fitness together.”

GIRLS WATER POLO

San Luis Obispo 16, Morro Bay 0

Kacie Gin led 10 different Tigers scorers with four goals as San Luis Obispo defeated the Pirates in the season opener for both teams.

Abby Hollister and Emma Tietje had two goals apiece, while Zoe Berkowitz had four saves for the Tigers (1-0).

Paso Robles 19, Santa Maria 2

Erika Smeltzer, Stephanie Smith, and Sara Miller all had three goals each for the Bearcats (1-0). Bailey Magnuson and Michaela Iunker each had two goals.

Paso Robles goalies Marti Rabrois and Shannon Rees, each had two saves.

“It was nice seeing the three girls score three goals,” Paso Robles coach Duane McRoy said, “It was good to see the scoring spread. It was a great win to start the season.”
