Prep Roundup: Paso Robles, Arroyo Grande win in boys water polo playoffs

The Paso Robles High boys water polo team beat Downey 9-8 in double overtime Tuesday, with Monty Renfrow’s winning goal with 1 minute, 11 seconds left in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.

Renfrow had two goals in the game, as did Devon Nicklas and Noah Erwin. Ricky Lloyd scored three times for Paso Robles (14-15).Paso Robles goalie Ben Nagengast had 14 saves.

“Both teams played incredible back-and-forth defense,” Paso Robles coach Duane McRoy said. “ But we spread around our offense today. They started keying on one person, and then we had other people step it up.”

The Bearcats moved on to visit Royal at Westlake High in the second round Thursday.

Arroyo Grande 11, Sunny Hills 10

Tanner Sandman scored the game-winning goal with 1:16 left in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles (19-10) a win in the first round of the Division 4 playoffs.

Sandman, Dennis Meffert, Roberto Dessi and Jack Empey all had two goals in the win.

Chandler Mankins had three saves, while Clint Doucette had one.

The Eagles will take on Redlands East Valley, the Citrus Belt League champion, in the second round Thursday.

Westlake 18, San Luis Obispo 11

Trevor Meinhold scored four goals for the Tigers, Casey Blauer scored three, and Nick Eaton had two in a first-round Division 4 loss. Goalie Darren Paul had 15 saves.

Westlake led 4-0 in the first quarter, and San Luis Obispo (17-13) pulled within 6-5 at halftime.

“Although we pulled back in the second half, I was glad to even up the score some,” San Luis Obispo coach Aaron Sue said.


Marlborough 3, Arroyo Grande 2

Kylie Anderson had 14 kills, six blocks and two aces, but the Eagles fell in the first round of the Division 1A playoffs, 25-19, 11-25, 20-25, 25-22, 16-14.

Danielle Mullery had eight kills and four blocks, while Jade Fuller had 21 digs and an ace. Millisa Morrow had 41 assists and three aces for the Eagles (21-6).

Valencia 3, Atascadero 1

The Greyhounds lost 27-25, 22-25, 17-25, 12-25 in the first round of the Division 1A playoffs.

Brittany Davis led Atascadero with 19 kills, and Mary Kate Evans had nine kills. Haley Ogden had 40 assists, and Ashlee Reusche had eight digs.

Yorba Linda 3, Templeton 0

Yorba Linda defeated the Eagles 21-25, 16-25, 21-25 in the first round of the Division 3AA playoffs.

Jeanine Madson and Sarah Kretzu both had seven kills, and Sydney Roth had 21 assists and four aces for Templeton.

“I think we had a great season and our program is taking upward steps every year,” Templeton coach Jodi Kelly said.

Shandon 3, Le Lycee 0

Dontavia Henderson had 18 kills, two blocks and 16 digs in the Outlaws’ first- round win in the Division 5A playoffs.

Kayla Celis had 12 kills, six aces and 15 digs, while Vivian Soto had 18 digs and two aces for the Outlaws (11-7).

Coast Union 3, Providence Hall 0

The Broncos (14-5) swept Providence Hall 25-12, 25-17, 25-19 in the first round of the Division 5A playoffs.

Sophie Flemion had seven kills, five aces and 25 assists, and Karla Soto had six kills and three aces.

Coast Union’s Roxy Mertens had two aces, two kills, two blocks and six digs.
