Prep Roundup: Santa Ynez downs Templeton in battle of LPL girls volleyball leaders

The Templeton High girls volleyball team lost for the first time in league play this year Tuesday night, falling to undefeated Santa Ynez in a sweep, 25-20, 25-19, 25-18.

Templeton’s Jeanine Madson had nine kills, and Sarah Kretzu had eight. Alyssa Price had seven kills and five blocks.

“It was a really close and exciting game,” Templeton coach Jodi Kelly said. “The other team hit well and hard from the right side. Hitting errors are what held us back.”

The Eagles (8-2, 4-1 Los Padres League) came into the match ranked No. 8 in this week’s CIF-Southern Section Division 3-AA poll.

San Luis Obispo 3, Righetti 0

The Tigers swept the Warriors, 25-16, 25-18, 25-14.

Amelia Brown had 12 kills, Maggie Eppright had 26 assists and Linnea Ramirez had 17 digs for San Luis Obispo (19-4, 5-0 PAC 7).

Atascadero 3, Pioneer Valley 0

The Greyhounds (4-2 PAC 7) beat the Panthers 25-14, 25-8, 25-15.

Atascadero’s Haley Ogden had 25 assists, and Kendall Featherstone had eight kills and four aces.

Atascadero’s Brittany Davis had 12 kills, and Hannah McMillan had six.

Paso Robles 3, St. Joseph 1

The Bearcats rebounded from a third-set loss to defeat the Knights 25-17, 25-21, 20-25, 25-18.

Molly Donovan had 18 kills, and Emily Cone had eight kills for Paso Robles (9-6, 2-3 PAC 7).

Morro Bay 3, Santa Maria 0

The Pirates (3-2 LPL) swept 25-13, 25-13, 25-14.

Morro Bay’s kills leader was Nicky Subler with nine.

Kylie Gacad had 24 assists, and her sister Tia Gacad had six kills and eight digs.

Cabrillo 3, Nipomo 2

The Titans (7-3, 2-3 LPL) got 23 kills and 10 digs from Stephanie Persky but fell 20-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-11, 15-12.

Sarah Stahl led Nipomo with 18 digs, and Cristina Ozzino led with 40 assists.

Coastal Christian 3, North County Ch. 0

The Conquerors (6-0, 4-0 Coast Valley League) beat the Crusaders (2-7, 1-4 CVL) 25-7, 25-16, 25-3.

Coastal Christian’s Leslie Henry had nine kills and six aces. Joanne Lindstaedt had 19 assists, and Koral Wright had 16 digs.

North County Christian’s Cheyenne Ricks had three aces and six kills, and Kylie Berguist had nine assists.

Coast Union 3, Cuyama Valley 0

Sophie Flemion had six aces and 11 kills as the Broncos swept the Bears 25-21, 25-17, 25-11.

Katelyn Lorenz also had three aces and six kills for Coast Union (5-4, 4-0 CVL).

BOYS WATER POLO

Arroyo Grande 7, Paso Robles 6

It was a close call for the Eagles (6-4, 3-1 PAC 7) against the Bearcats (1-3 PAC 7).

Paso Robles led 3-0 in the second quarter before settling for a 4-4 halftime tie. With the score tied at 5 after three quarters, Arroyo Grande scored two in the fourth.

Robert Dessi, Jack Empey and Nicholas Ruiz all scored two goals for Arroyo Grande, and Nick Valente scored one.

Goalie Chandler Mankins had two saves, and the Eagles’ other goalie, Clint Doucette, had four.

Paso Robles’ Devon Nicklas scored twice.

“Paso Robles played really well — hats off to them for making us play,” Arroyo Grande coach Steven Allen said.

San Luis Obispo 12, St. Joseph 5

The Tigers (3-1 PAC 7) rallied after the Knights led 3-0 in the first quarter.

Casey Blauer had five goals, Kyle Sweazy had two, and Kenton Hauber had one.

San Luis Obispo’s goalie Darren Paul had 12 saves.

GIRLS TENNIS

San Luis Obispo 10, Righetti 8

The Tigers (6-1, 4-1 PAC 7) won a close matchup against the Warriors. Their No. 1 singles player, Tori Troesch, swept 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, and Abigail Will also won 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

The doubles team of Darla Berkefeld and Lauren Hutkin lost 6-4 before winning 6-2, 7-6.

Lompoc 10, Nipomo 8

The Titans’ Lauren Kueffler swept 6-0, 6-3, 6-0 in the loss. Also for Nipomo (2-6, 2-3 LPL), Kelly Springford and Madi Slaven went 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 in doubles.

Templeton 12, Coast Union 6

The Broncos’ Alex Zaragoza went 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 as Coast Union fell to the Eagles.

In doubles, Morgan May and Kylie Castle went 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, while Dalia Zaragoza and Bennett McManus went 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 for Coast Union.

No information on the Eagles’ wins was available.
