Prep roundup: Tigers knock off Bearcats in PAC 7 volleyball showdown

In a rematch between last year’s PAC 7 girls volleyball co-champions, San Luis Obispo High defeated Paso Robles 3-1 on the road Thursday night, giving the Tigers momentum as they look to claim sole possession of the league title this season.

The teams split the first two sets 25-15, 22-25 before the Tigers (12-2, 2-0 PAC 7) grabbed a 26-24 win in the third set and cruised to a clinching 25-13 win in the fourth.

Maggie Eppright paced the Tigers with 41 assists and 29 digs. Linnea Ramirez had 28 digs, Elizabeth Culpepper had 14 kills and Jessica Chellsen had 12 kills in the win.

Molly Donovan had 18 kills and four digs for the Bearcats (8-5, 1-2). Kellie Reynolds led Paso Robles with 32 assists, and Jackie Caraveo had 10 digs.

Arroyo Grande 3, Atascadero 0

The Eagles (12-2, 3-0 PAC 7) defeated the Greyhounds in three closely contested sets, 25-17, 25-22, 25-20. Alyssa Koenig led Arroyo Grande with 14 kills and two aces, and Kylie Anderson added seven kills and five blocks.

Brittany Davis led Atascadero (9-5, 1-2) with 12 kills, and Ashlee Reusche had 19 digs.

Morro Bay 3, Lompoc 0

The Pirates won on the road handily against the Braves 25-16, 25-12, 25-10 in a Los Padres League match.

Monica Santiago had 17 digs and seven aces for Morro Bay (2-5, 2-1 LPL). Tia Gacad recorded eight kills and nine digs, while Kylie Gacad contributed 28 assists.

Templeton 3, Nipomo 2

Down two sets to none, the Eagles rallied back to defeat the Titans (5-9, 0-2 LPL). Nipomo won the first two sets, 25-20, 25-23, before Templeton seized control of the final three sets, 25-15, 25-21, 15-8.

Templeton’s Stephanie Persky had 24 kills, Sarah Stahl had 20 digs and Christina Ozzimo added 38 assists.

Shandon 3, Laton 2

The Outlaws staved off a Mustangs comeback and won 26-24, 25-20, 19-25, 15-25, 15-13.

Adilene Torres starred for Shandon (3-2) with 34 digs and six aces. Kayla Celis contributed 20 kills and five aces in the nonleague win. Laticia Muniz had 51 assists.

Maricopa 3, North County Christian 0

The Crusaders (1-6, 0-2 Coastal Valley League) lost in straight sets 25-14, 25-21, 25-18. North County Christian’s Brianna Feld had a team-high five aces, seven kills and 11 digs.

Coast Union 3, Orcutt Academy 0

The Broncos won in straight sets 25-7, 25-16, 25-18 to improve to 2-4.

Nicky Ortiz led Coast Union with 12 aces, 15 kills and 10 digs, while Sophie Flemion added five kills, 39 assists and three blocks.

GIRLS TENNISArroyo Grande 16, Atascadero 2

The Eagles (6-0, 3-0 PAC 7) had little trouble against the Greyhounds, setting up a showdown of PAC 7 unbeatens when they host San Luis Obispo at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Freshman Sophie Whittle swept 6-4, 6-0, 6-0 for Arroyo Grande, and Lauren Hayashi swept 7-5, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Maurisa Dominguez and Alexis Flood (7-5, 6-4, 6-0), as well as Stephani Domako and Amber Domako (7-6, 6-2, 6-1) also swept.

Atascadero (4-2, 1-2) got its wins from Rhi Dudley and Sydney Sima (6-2) in doubles and Amber Petersen (6-0) in singles.

San Luis Obispo 14, Paso Robles 4

The Tigers’ top two singles stars, Tori Troesch and Abigail Will, each swept, with Troesch winning 6-3, 6-0, 6-3 and Will winning6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles, the Tigers (4-0, 2-0) got sweeps from the tandems of India Hoffman and Joelle Lewis (6-3, 6-0, 6-0) and Caroline Burke and Annaliese Lippold (6-4, 6-3, 6-4).

“The conditions were extremely hot, and I thought our girls concentrated, played well and did a great job across the board,” San Luis Obispo coach Gary Etheredge said.

Nipomo 11, Morro Bay 7

Nipomo’s Lauren Kueffler swept her three matches 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, as the Titans held off the Pirates in the LPL match.

Kelly Barrett won two of three matches for Nipomo (1-4, 1-1 LPL). The Titans’ top two doubles teams, consisting of Gianna Abati and Ann Wardlaw, and the No. 2 doubles team of Kelly Springford and Mady Slaven, each won two of their three matches.

Morro Bay (0-5, 0-3) was led by Lily Quirk, who went 0-6, 6-4, 6-3. Emily Franzmann and Claire Olson went 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 in doubles, and Tess Badrigian and Sarah Keas finished 0-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Orcutt 15, Mission Prep 3

Mission Prep fell to 2-5.

Ruslana Cannell highlighted Orcutt’s victory with wins in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-1.

BOYS WATER POLOAtascadero 12, Paso Robles 11

The Greyhounds’ Chad Ponek led all scorers with seven goals in their victory over the Bearcats. Paso Robles’ Devon Nicklas and Monty Renfrow led with three goals each.

Even though Paso Robles cut a four-goal, fourth-quarter deficit to one, it was not enough to overcome their division rivals.

“It was a fun game between two rivals. It was a back and forth battle and a really exciting game for us for us. It’s the kind of game that’s been taking place the past few years,” Paso Robles coach Duane McRoy said.

GIRLS GOLFPAC 7 golf tournament

Paso Robles came in second in the PAC 7 golf tournament at Chalk Mountain, carding 234 as a team.

St. Joseph won with a 213.

Paso Robles’ Ashley Levanduski placed second among all players with a 38, one stroke behind medalist Desirae Gillaspy of St. Joseph.

Atascadero finished third at 245, led by Marissa McClain who shot a 45.

Arroyo Grande (247) followed closely at fourth, led by Anna Zhang’s 46.

San Luis Obispo placed sixth overall (266) out of the seven competing teams.
