Oxnard High senior safety Adrian Padilla was recovering from emergency surgery after suffering a head injury during a game against San Luis Obispo on Friday night.
Padilla was in the intensive care unit at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, San Luis Obispo coach David Kelley said Sunday. “(He) has some serious brain problems, but he is recovering,” Kelley said. “He’s making progress.”
Kelley said he did not see the injury occur.
“(Padilla) walked himself off of the field and then collapsed on the sideline,” Kelley said.
There’s been outreach from the San Luis Obispo community to aid Padilla’s family. With the help of a San Luis Obispo High administrator, the family is currently staying at a hotel in San Luis Obispo, Kelley said.
Families have donated gift cards to local grocery stores, as well as full meals.
“(Padilla’s mother) came here with nothing,” Kelley said. “People are providing lunch and dinner, several coaches and players come by to visit.
“People are stepping up. We’ve had several members of the community offer the family to stay in their homes. It just shows what great people we have here.”
Items needed include gift cards for miscellaneous items, rolls of quarters and small boxes of laundry soap. To help, email Kelley at firstname.lastname@example.org.
