Prep Roundup: San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande start 3-0 in volleyball tournament

The San Luis Obispo High girls volleyball team led a strong showing by area schools by winning all three matches in pool play Friday at the San Luis Obispo Tournament, defeating Hanford 25-11, 25-11, Oak Park 25-10, 25-23 and Agoura 16-25, 25-18, 15-13.

Jessica Chellsen led the Tigers with 20 kills on the day, and Elizabeth Culpepper had 17. Maggie Eppright tallied 62 assists in the three games. Arroyo Grande also won all three of its matches, defeating Logan 25-12, 25-10, Mesa 25-17, 25-16, and Liberty 25-7, 25-10.

Atascadero was 2-1 on the day, defeating Villanova Prep 25-10, 25-11 and Sunnyside 26-24, 25-13. The Greyhounds then lost to Buena 25-18, 25-17 in their last match of the day.

Paso Robles went 1-2 on the day, as did Morro Bay.

The Bearcats won their first match against River Valley 25-21, 25-27, 15-13, but lost consecutive matches to Oxnard (23-25, 21-25) and La Reina (12-25, 11-25). Molly Donovan led Paso Robles with 18 kills in the three games.

The Pirates lost to San Marcos 25-19, 26-24 before beating Newbury Park 19-25, 27-25, 17-15. Morro Bay then lost to Saugus 25-12, 25-11.

Templeton lost all three of its matches to Trabuco Hills, Oaks Christian and Moorpark, respectively. No further information was made available.

Bracket play begins at San Luis Obispo High today.

BOYS WATER POLO

Atascadero 11, Oxnard 8; Moorpark 15, Atascadero 11

The Greyhounds split their two games at the Cornejo Classic Tournament in Thousand Oaks.

Against Oxnard, Chad Ponek had a team-high six goals, and Will Mehring added three.

Matt Buckingham had 10 saves in goal for Atascadero.

Against Moorpark, Ponek and Mehring again scored six and three goals apiece, respectively, and Chris Cunningham had two. Buckingham had nine saves for the Greyhounds.

Cleveland 13, San Luis Obispo 5; San Luis Obispo 11, Pacifica 7

The Tigers split their two games at the Cornejo Classic.

The Tigers fell behind 8-1 at halftime against Cleveland. Five different Tigers scored a goal, and Garrett Cobune had four saves in goal.Casey Blauer’s four goals against Pacifica proved to be the difference as San Luis Obispo rebounded from the earlier loss. Skylar Brainard and Nick Eaton each had two goals, and Cobune had seven saves.

The Tigers are scheduled to play three games today.

Paso Robles 13, Hueneme 7

The Bearcats won their first game at the Cornejo Classic as Nickalas Devon and Monty Renfrow scored three goals each, and Norton Noah had two. No information on Paso Robles’ second game in the tournament was provided.

Arroyo Grande at Cal High Tennis Tournament

The Eagles went 2-1 in pool play in Clovis, defeating Los Gatos 6-0 and Rio Americano 5-1 before losing to Garces 7-6 in a tiebreaker. Lauren Hayashi won all three matches on the day, and Sophie Whittle won two out of three singles. Arroyo Grande finished Friday in the top eight and second in its pool.
