Prep Roundup: Atascadero sweeps Morro Bay in volleyball

The Atascadero High girls volleyball team started the season by sweeping Morro Bay 3-0 on Thursday night.

The Greyhounds won 25-17, 25-16, 25-22.

Brittany Davis led Atascadero with 16 kills and three aces, while Haley Ogden had seven digs and 25 assists.

Templeton 3, Coast Union 2

The Eagles beat the Broncos 25-14, 17-25, 25-15, 12-25, 15-10 in both teams’ opener.

Heather Fields had 12 kills and four aces, Jeanine Madson had nine kills and 19 digs and Alyssa Price added six kills and six blocks for Templeton.

For Coast Union, Nicky Ortiz had eight kills, five digs and four blocks, Karla Soto had seven kills, and Amy Avina and Sophie Flemion added five kills apiece.

It’s the third straight season that the match between the two teams has gone to five sets.

Arroyo Grande 3, Santa Ynez 0

Alyssa Koenig had 10 kills, Melissa Morrow had five aces and 27 assists, and the Eagles swept the Pirates 25-20, 25-18, 25-22 in each teams’ opener.

Kylie Anderson added two kills and seven blocks for the Eagles, Madison Jacobs had six kills and a block and Kendall VandenBerg had two aces, six kills and four digs.

San Luis Obispo 3, Cabrillo 0

The Tigers swept 25-22, 25-15, 25-23 in their season opener.

Elizabeth Culpepper had a team-high 11 kills, and Maggie Eppright notched 18 assists to go along with 12 digs and four aces for San Luis Obispo. Linnea Ramirez added 11 digs.

Paso Robles 3, Santa Maria 0

The Bearcats swept 25-12, 25-22, 25-16 in their season opener. Kellie Reynolds had 15 assists, and Molly Donovan had six kills and three aces for Paso Robles.

Mission Prep 3, St. Joseph 2

The Royals rallied from a 2-1 deficit to come back and grab a season-opening win against the Knights.

Mission Prep won 25-21, then lost the next two 25-22, 25-23. The Royals came back to grab 25-13 and 15-6 wins to close out the match.

Sadie Casacca had 23 kills, 16 digs and five aces in the win, and Grace Ready had 11 kills, 27 digs and three blocks. Shannon Dudley also had 45 assists, nine aces and six digs for the Royals.

Nipomo 3, Pioneer Valley 1

The Titans won 25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18 in its season opener.


San Marcos 14, San Luis Obispo 6

Trevor Meinhold and Chase Andersen scored two goals apiece for the Tigers, and Nick Eaton and Skylar Brainard each scored once as San Luis Obispo fell on the road in its season debut.

Darren Paul and Garrett Cohune combined for seven saves in goal.

Pioneer Valley 11, Morro Bay 8

D.J. Marcy scored three goals for the Pirates, but it wasn’t enough as Pioneer Valley handed Morro Bay a season-opening loss.Mac Reinhart had seven saves in goal for the Pirates.


Santa Ynez 235, San Luis Obispo 265

Nora Zakaria shot a nine-hole 44, and Jillian Johnson carded a 53, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers fell to the Pirates at Alisal River.

Also for San Luis Obispo, Sam Tsau and Sam Lopez both shot 55, while Catuih Campos shot 58 and Anna Talmadge shot 59.

Arroyo Grande 243, Nipomo 258

Led by Anna Zhang’s 11-over 44, the Eagles (2-0) finished 12 strokes under their previous school record for the front nine at Monarch Dunes Golf Course in Nipomo.

Zhang, Ramie Castilleja (47), Emma Fuhs (49) and Breana Garcia (51) all shot personal bests for Arroyo Grande.

Sara Clark and Courtney Cuzick each shot 44 for the Titans (0-1).


Atascadero 16, Morro Bay 2

Amber Petersen, the Greyhounds’ No. 1 singles player, won 6-0, 6-0, including not allowing a point in the second set, and Atascadero cruised to its second victory of the season.

Mallory Miller (6-0, 6-3) and Sydney Sima (6-3, 6-0, 6-2) were also perfect in singles play. Kelly Doicourt and Erin Morey (5-7, 6-2, 6-1) had the only doubles loss, and Rhi Dudley and Claire Jacobs (6-1, 6-1) and Jackie Wulff and Lauryn Cooper (6-2, 6-3, 6-1) were perfect for Atascadero in doubles.

Templeton 12, Coast Union 6

Bennett McManus and Courtney Castle won their first doubles match of their varsity career, 6-2, but the Broncos fell to the Eagles.

Alex Zargoza won all her matches for the Broncos (0-2). She went 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
