Sports roundup: Morro Bay High grad Hansen earns All-America honorable mention in golf

UC Davis golfer and Morro Bay High graduate Matt Hansen, this year's Big West Freshman of the Year and NCAA Southwest Regional medalist, received PING All-America honorable mention accolades Thursday from the Golf Coaches Association of America.

“This is a most well-deserved honor for Matt,” Aggies head coach Cy Williams said. “He had a monster freshman season and winning the regional was an incredible accomplishment. We can’t wait to watch him build off this great start to his collegiate career.”

Hansen, from Los Osos, was second on the team in scoring this season, averaging 72.0 strokes per round. He qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships in Stillwater, Okla., and shot a 73 in the first round before illness forced him to withdraw.

SLO Blues 8, Team Vegas 7

Catcher Jo Jo Sharrar had three hits, Cuesta College’s Alex Detz led four more players with two hits apiece, and the San Luis Obispo Blues came back from a five-run deficit to notch an 8-7 summer collegiate baseball victory over visiting Team Vegas at SLO Stadium.

Sharrar, who batted 3 for 4, doubled in the fifth inning and scored the tying run for the Blues (12-5, 9-5 California Collegiate League), who trailed 7-2 going into the bottom of the inning and evened up the three-game series at 1-1 going into today’s finale.

Detz, who was 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI, drove in the winning run with a sac fly in the seventh. Adam Frazier, Tanner Witt and Chad Christensen, who doubled in the tying runs in the fifth, were the other Blues players with two hits.

“Our club showed a lot of character tonight to even up the series,” Blues manager Chal Fanning said. “It should make for a good rubber match against a good Vegas club.”
