Prep Roundup: Atascadero wins PAC 7 title as all 14 wrestlers reach section meet

For Atascadero, no wrestler was left out.

After claiming first place at the PAC 7 league finals Saturday, all 14 wrestlers punched their tickets to go to the CIF-Southern Section individual meet being held in San Luis Obispo in two weeks.

The Greyhounds were also PAC 7 dual meet champions.

Every wrestler for the Greyhounds finished in the top three spots of their weight classes, with six claiming first-place titles. Wrestlers who finished in the top three in their class qualified to move on to the next round.

Individual winners for Atascadero were Michael Clemmensen (103 pounds), Jordan Gottfried (119), Abe Halterman (130), Paul Woodman (145), Elijah Jackson (160) and Matt Ducasse (189).

Both Paso Robles and Righetti tied for second place. The Bearcats had 12 wrestlers advance and had one — Cesar Delgado (171) — win his weight class. Delgado won his second straight PAC 7 title.

Colton Smith (215) won his weight class for Arroyo Grande, which had three wrestlers move on.

Los Padres League Championship

Morro Bay avenged a dual meet loss to Santa Ynez from earlier in the week to win the LPL tournament and earn co-champion honors with the other Pirates.

Morro Bay scored 151 points with Santa Ynez placing second at 138. Cabrillo (88), Santa Maria (77.5), Nipomo (69.5) and Lompoc (59) rounded out the field.

Morro Bay had four wrestlers claim individual titles and earned the right to send nine to the CIF-Southern Section individual meet being held in San Luis Obispo in two weeks.

Dolin Mininni (135), Jaccob Carlson (140), Kent Beecham (145) and Frank Martinez (171) all won their weight classes for Morro Bay.

Nipomo’s Brett Kimball won the 285-pound title, and the Titans will send a total of five to the section individual meet.

Wrestlers who finished in the top three in their class qualified to move on to the next round.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Mission Prep 71, Immanuel 44

Thanks in large part to a pesky full-court press and Connor Woolpert’s 21 points, the Royals (14-9) cruised in the second half.With Mission Prep leading 27-23 at the half, the Royals outscored Immanuel 31-12 in the third quarter.

Spencer Rowley had 20 points for Mission Prep, and Arthur Lane added 11 in the road victory.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mission Prep 60, Immanuel 31

Kaylee Williams scored 14 points, and Jenna Dunbar scored 13 points for Mission Prep (19-5).

The Royals led Immanuel 28-14 at halftime and allowed just 17 points in the second half. They surrendered no more than 10 points in a quarter.

Morgan Liebscher also added 11 points for Mission Prep (19-5).

GIRLS WATER POLO

Arroyo Grande at SoCal Championships

The Eagles beat Villa Park but lost to San Marcos to finish in 18th place in the tournament.

In the Eagles’ 8-4 win over Villa Park, Kim Johnson scored three goals.

Katie Svercheck and Caitlin Taylor both scored two goals in a 7-6 overtime loss to San Marcos.

“We had a great weekend,” coach Steven Allen said. “It’s one of the best finishes we have ever had.”

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

State indoor qualifiers

Five Paso Robles athletes qualified in eight events for the state meet at the qualifying meet in Kingsburg.

Boys qualifiers for state were Bo Bonnheim in the shot put, Pepe Gonzales in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs, Imer Hernandez in the 55 meters and the 55-meter hurdles and Josh Jeter in the 55 meters.

On the girls side, Tess Rountree will compete in the high jump and the 55-meter hurdles.

The state meet will be held Feb. 26 in Fresno.
