Cunningham leads Coast Union to boys basketball win

Connor Cunningham had a triple-double on Wednesday night to lead the Coast Union High boys basketball team to a 43-25 Coast Valley League win over Maricopa.

Cunningham, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, had a team-high 17 points, 14 rebounds and 11 steals, polishing off a marathon stretch for Coast Union, which just got done hosting a tournament and played its sixth game in the past week.

Sean Mertens added 10 points for the Broncos (3-4, 2-0 CVL), and Eddie Salazar had eight.

Brady Candaele scored on a second-half penalty kick to lift the Tigers to the nonleague win.

Lauren Harper made three saves for San Luis Obispo (3-1-2), which will play against San Joaquin Memorial of Fresno at 2 p.m. Friday at the Garces Tournament in Bakersfield.

The Broncos got goals from Uri Escalera, Pablo Savila and Luis De Alba.

Victor Casas and Oscar Catalan had assists for Coast Union (2-0).

Two goalkeepers had a save apiece in combining for the shutout — Juan Leonardo in the first half and Andy Gordon in the second.
