Prep Roundup: Paso Robles tops Morro Bay in wrestling opener

With competitors from both sides still out because of ongoing football playoff runs, the Paso Robles High wrestling team defeated Morro Bay 58-30 in a nonleague dual Wednesday evening.

“It was a great opener,” Bearcats coach Chris Monteiro said. “We’re happy with the fundamentals, and they were able to perform. It’s a good sign they’ve been paying attention the last three weeks.”

Zach Holmes recorded the quickest pin of the night for Paso Robles at 103 pounds, ending his matchup in 53 seconds.

The Bearcats also got pins from Robbie Martinez (26 seconds into the second round at 125 pounds), Jake Perez (in 1:15 at 130), Chase Phillips (in 3:35 at 140), Luis Rea (in 2:20 at 171) and Ethan Nichols (in 1:08 at the heavyweight level). Ryan Miller added a 12-2 decision win for Paso Robles at 135.

Dolin Mininni highlighted the night for Morro Bay, pinning his 145-pound opponent in 1:08. Jaccob Carlson (2:30 into the second round at 152 pounds) and Andrew Cummings (55 seconds at 189) also had pins for the Pirates.

Morro Bay’s Kent Beecham also won, by default at 160 after his opponent left with an injury.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Templeton 48, Pioneer Valley 41

Freshman Lauren Stuedemann had 13 points and was 9 of 11 at the free-throw line to lead the Eagles (2-0).

Katie Hunter added nine points for Templeton, and Carly O’Sullivan had seven points and 13 rebounds.

GIRLS WATER POLO

San Luis Obispo 12, Nipomo 3

Kennedy Peters scored five goals to lead the Tigers (2-0) to the nonleague win.

Eva Bakker added three scores for San Luis Obispo, and Elizabeth Waddell had two. Zoe Berkowitz made eight saves in the win.

GIRLS SOCCER

Nipomo 5, Orcutt Academy 1

In the first varsity meeting between the two programs, the Titans’ Maricruz Arevalo had two goals and an assist.

Gracie Albano, Brianna Ayala and Brianna Turk also scored for Nipomo (1-1), which had a 19-3 advantage in shots.
