Area Roundup: Hansen qualifies for U.S. Amateur in golf again

Recently graduated Morro Bay High golf standout Matt Hansen qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship for the second year in a row Monday, carding a two-round 140 at San Luis Obispo Country Club.

Hansen, a Los Osos native signed to continue his career at UC Davis next year, shot an opening-round 5-under 66 before following it with a 74 to tie two others for the top sectional qualifying spot.

The U.S. Amateur Championship will be held Aug. 23-29 in Chambers Bay, Wash. Last year, Hansen shot a 17-over 157 total at the same event, missing the cut for match play by nine strokes.

Cal Poly men to swim in Pac-10

The Cal Poly men’s swimming and diving program will join the Pac-10 Conference as an affiliate member heading into next season, the school announced Tuesday.

The Mustangs have competed in the Big West Conference since 1996-97, but that league dissolved its sponsorship of the sport in the wake of the recent departure of Cal State Northridge, which cut the number of Big West programs to four.

UC Santa Barbara announced it would also be joining the Pac-10 via the Big West in the same capacity.

This past year, Cal Poly finished third at the Big West Championships, its highest-ever placing at the Division I level. A month ago, the Cal Poly women’s swimming and diving program was admitted into the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

While the majority of Cal Poly’s programs compete in the Big West, it is also an associate member of the Pac-10 in wrestling.
