The Nipomo High boys water polo team won five matches to claim the program’s first water polo championship of any kind at the California State Games last weekend.
Nipomo, playing in the under-16 division, beat San Diego Shores 13-5 and Empire 14-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Nipomo beat Coronado High of San Diego 5-4 in the quarterfinal and Soqual Waxem of San Jose 6-5 in the semifinals to advance to the final against Silicon Club of San Jose.
Trailing 4-2 in the final, Nipomo stormed back to win 6-5 to claim the title.

Marc Baker led the Titans with 15 goals in the tournament, Cole Holloway had nine and Derek Seaman added seven.
Goalie Kirk Wilenius, who was named team MVP, made 30 saves in the tournament, including nine in the championship game.
