Mission Prep boys soccer, North County Christian girls basketball to host Southern California regional games

Two local high school teams received first-round home games this week when the CIF-Southern California Regional Playoff brackets were announced Sunday.

The Mission Prep boys soccer team and the North County Christian girls basketball team — each winners of a section divisional title — will entertain visitors.

The Mission Prep boys and girls basketball teams, which each lost Central Section divisional championship games this past weekend, will be on the road.

Interestingly enough, the Royals will have both home and away games at the same site on back-to-back days.

On Monday, the undefeated boys soccer (23-0) team, champion in Division V of the Central Section, will play visiting Animo Leadership of Inglewood (24-6-2) in a Southern California Division III first-round match at St. Joseph at 4 p.m.

The Royals are the No. 3 seed in the eight-team bracket.

“I was surprised to see we got that,” Mission Prep coach Bob Galarneau said. “I thought, ‘Oh great, these guys are good.’ They’re not a sixth-seed team. Honestly, I think they should have got the three seed and we get the sixth seed. But hey, bring ’em on.”

Animo Leadership, the Southern Section Division VI champion, ended the San Luis Obispo High boys’ season with a 3-1 first-round playoff victory. The Royals beat the Tigers 1-0 in a non-conference match earlier this year.

The winner will play either Santa Clara of Oxnard (16-7-1) or No. 2 Farmersville (27-1-3) on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Royals’ girls basketball team (14-13) will play St. Joseph (26-4) in a Division IV first-round game in Santa Maria at 7 p.m.

The Knights beat Mission Prep 67-19 in a nonconference matchup earlier this season.

The winner will play either No. 4 Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (29-5) or Sierra of Tollhouse (21-9) on Thursday.

Also on Tuesday, the North County Christian girls basketball team (19-5), the Southern Section Division 6A champion, will host Central Valley Christian (20-7) in a Southern California Division V first-round game at 7.

Central Valley Christian beat Coast Union 69-20 earlier this season. The Crusaders boast three regular-season wins over the Broncos, the most recent being a 61-19 victory.

The North County Christian-Central Valley Christian winner will visit No. 1 St. Anthony of Long Beach (22-9) on Thursday.

The Mission Prep boys basketball team (13-16), runner-up in the Central Section’s Division V, will travel to play Besant Hill (27-2) in Ojai at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The most recent common opponent between the two is Renaissance Academy of La Cañada. Besant Hill beat Renaissance 51-46. The Royals lost 54-46.

The Besant Hill-Mission Prep winner will take on either No. 4 Windward of Los Angeles (23-8) or Christian Life of Escondido (17-10) on Thursday.
