Mission Prep girls basketball team beats Kingsburg in Showdown

The Mission Prep girls basketball team avenged a playoff loss last year to Kingsburg, defeating the Vikings 43-32 on Monday afternoon at the Mission Prep Showdown on Cowitz Court.

A year ago, Kingsburg topped the Royals 57-45 in the semifinals of the CIF-Central Section Division IV postseason tournament.

“Hopefully, it’ll help us in (this year’s playoff) seeding,” Mission Prep coach John Krossa said.

On Monday, Jenna Dunbar and Bri Harvey each had a game-best 11 points for the Royals (7-9), while teammate Ally Kersthold added eight. Emily Campos paced the Vikings (8-8) with 10.

The teams found their rhythm offensively after a first half that ended in a 13-12 Mission Prep lead.

“It was like both teams were sleepwalking,” Krossa said of the first half. “We got out of the fog in the second half.”

Also at the Mission Prep Showdown:Fresno Christian 78, Coast Union 19In a rematch of last year’s Central Section Division V championship matchup, which Coast Union won 44-42, the Broncos were outscored 39-5 in the second half.

Rachel Devries had a team-high six points for Coast Union (4-13). Paige Armstrong-Maltos paced the Eagles (10-7) with 15.
