The Mission Prep girls tennis team will get another crack at CIF-Central Section power Bakersfield Christian after a 9-0 win over Firebaugh in the CIF-Central Section Division V quarterfinals on Tuesday.
“They’re a very good team,” Mission Prep coach John Ronca said of Bakersfield Christian. “They’re the highest-ranked Central Section team regardless of divisions. I have no doubt they have a couple of girls that will play Division I college tennis.”
The Royals have lost to Bakersfield Christian in the section final the last two years.
Firebaugh proved to be little more than a tuneup for Mission Prep, which lost just 10 total games in 18 sets.
Rachel Ronca, Helena Olivieri, Ally Kersthold and Jenna Dunbar all swept their two-set matches 6-0, 6-0. Ronca teamed with Olivieri, and Kersthold partnered with Dunbar to also sweep their doubles matches without dropping a game.
With the match decided quickly, the Royals were already looking ahead to the rematch in Bakersfield on Thursday.
“We’re going to prepare for them like we did with any other large school,” John Ronca explained. “We’ll go out there and try to be as aggressive against them as possible. We want to be aggressive at the lower ladder to try to steal some points and give our doubles a chance to win some meaningful matches.”
