Royals volleyball team loses for only second time this season

The Mission Prep girls volleyball team suffered just its second loss of the season Monday evening, falling at Laguna Blanca, 25-12, 25-14, 25-22.

Danielle Brescia had a team-best seven kills and four blocks for the Royals (12-2), and Andrea Fernandez added four kills, three aces and two blocks in defeat.

“It’s good to have this type of match at this point of the season,” Mission Prep coach Michelle Lakey said of the competition level.

Sadie Casacca chipped in 10 digs and three aces for Mission Prep, whose early-season résumé already includes sweeps of larger schools Cabrillo, Lompoc, Templeton, Morro Bay and Santa Maria.

The Royals, who advanced to the CIF-Southern California Division V state playoffs last year, also have claimed a 3-2 win over St. Joseph and 3-1 victories against Righetti and Nipomo. Their only other loss this season came at the hands of Arroyo Grande, which is ranked No. 7 in the Southern Section Division I-A poll.

Sydney Johnson was close behind for Arroyo Grande at 46, followed by Ashley Roese’s 47. Ashley Levanduski led the Bearcats with a 45.

The Eagles’ CIF-qualifying team total was a 21-stroke improvement upon the program’s all-time low at the course.

Atascadero 249, San Luis Obispo 291The Greyhounds’ depth prevailed over the Tigers’ Alessia Weckenmann, who took medalist honors by carding a 41 at Chalk Mountain Golf Course.

Kyleigh Jensen shot a team-best 46, followed by Corie Bruno and Danyele Rampone, who each had a 49 for Atascadero (3-3 PAC 7).

Santa Ynez 215, Morro Bay 332Michelle Cordova led Morro Bay by shooting a 58, followed by Jennifer Baltimore’s 59 at Morro Bay Golf Course.
