Prep Football: San Luis Obispo Tigers will be without key players against Atascadero

Two key San Luis Obispo High football seniors will not play in the Tigers’ homecoming game against Atascadero tonight, The Tribune has learned.

Matt Will, a receiver and defensive back, is done for the season after violating the team’s three-strikes disciplinary policy. Dylan Candaele, a quarterback and defensive back, will be suspended for one week, also for disciplinary reasons. San Luis Obispo head coach David Kelley confirmed both suspensions Thursday evening.

Kelley declined to comment on the specific reasons for the discipline. In general, he said that such football-related decisions are up to the coach’s discretion and could generally be based upon inappropriate conduct on the field, in the classroom or off campus.Candaele will be able to play against Righetti on Oct. 30, Kelley said.

Candaele, an all-San Luis Obispo County defensive back last year, has 17 tackles this season, and at quarterback, is 9-of-15 passing for 124 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He has rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns on 43 carries.

Senior running back and linebacker D.J. Clegg will be able to play tonight after serving a one-game suspension of his own last week, Kelley said. Will, who has five catches for 75 yards on the season, didn’t play last week, either, Kelley said.

San Luis Obispo athletic director Vic Ecklund declined comment Thursday night. Attempts to reach other school administrators via phone Thursday afternoon were unsuccessful.
