College Roundup: Mininni finishes fifth in state wrestling meet for Cuesta

Wrestling at 149 pounds, Dolin Mininni won his fifth-place match with a 19-2 technical fall to secure the best finish of any Cuesta College wrestler after the double-elimination state wrestling championships in Lemoore concluded Saturday.

Mininni, a former Morro Bay High standout, went 2-1 Saturday and 4-2 in the tournament. He won his first match of the day with a pin at the 6-minute, 7-second mark before losing in the consolation bracket semifinals with an 18-6 major decision.

At 165, Jonathan Urango was 2-0 after the first day but lost to eventual state champion Matt Hickman of Fresno City 6-4 in the semifinals. Urango lost a 14-9 decision in the consolation semifinals and was pinned at the 1:23 mark in the fifth-place match to finish in sixth place.

At 125, Matt Correa entered the tournament as top-ranked wrestler but lost a 3-2 decision in the quarterfinals Friday. Correa lost another one-point decision in the consolation quarterfinals Saturday, 4-3. He was finally on the right side of a one-point decision in the seventh-place match, winning 6-5.

Derek Jaurigue lost his 197-class consolation quarterfinals match 6-2 decision and his seventh-place match 2-0 decision to finish eighth.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Cuesta 73, Barstow 66

Alyssa Palma had 23 points, four assists, six rebounds, and three steals to lead Cuesta (7-2) to a third-place finish at the Allan Hancock Tournament.

Aria Johnson had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, and Amanda Legault had 12 points and five steals.

Barstow outshot Cuesta 47 percent to 35 from the field, but the Cougars had a 13-2 advantage in steals and attempted 23 more free throws.

Karissa Hayter had 16 points and eight rebounds for Barstow (4-7).

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cuesta 89, Los Medanos 70

Oscar Pedroso had a team-high 21 points in the Cougars’ win against Los Medanos to earn fifth place in the 16-team Modesto Tournament.

Plamen Hristov, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 19 points and 13 rebounds for Cuesta.

Jeremy Landenbergue had 16 points, and Kenny Robinson had 13 points and seven assists for the Cougars (9-4).
