Gordon Sturgess placed eighth overall for the Cuesta College men’s cross country team at the California Community College State Championships on Saturday.
Lauren Silacci placed 46th with a personal record of 19:41 in the women’s 5K race at Woodward Park in Fresno for the Cougars, while the men’s team placed 21st out of 28 teams with 580 points.
Sturgess, a Paso Robles High graduate, finished 57th at the State Championships as a freshman and is Cuesta’s first male All-State athlete in cross country since Sergio Reyes placed second in 1999.
“All the hard work he’s put in over the years has paid off,” coach Brian Locher said of Sturgess. “We’re really happy for his successes here.”

Silacci, a Paso Robles High graduate, has not competed on a cross country team since 2006. “Silacci’s ability to come back and run this well after taking six years off is pretty remarkable,” said Locher. “We’re really looking forward to what she can do in track. We think she can do some pretty big things.”
