The Cuesta College men’s basketball team defeated Santa Barbara 73-66 in Santa Barbara on Saturday night.
Cuesta’ Calen Coleman had 21 points, shooting 8 of 12 from the field and 3 of 5 from behind the 3-point line. Malte Kramer added 16 points, and Jeremy Landenberg had 12 for the Cougars (16-7, 4-1 Western State Conference).
The Cougar are tied for the WSC’s Northern Division lead with with Ventura, which they defeated in Ventura to open conference play.
The two teams will face off again in San Luis Obispo on Saturday after the Cougars host Oxnard on Wednesday.
Long Beach State 74, Cal Poly 67
Kristina Santiago scored a team-high 25 points for the Mustangs (6-12, 3-3 Big West Conference) against the 49ers (9-11, 4-3). Santiago also contributed 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season. Christine Martin and Jonae Ervin added 10 points apiece for Cal Poly.
Tipesa Moorer had 16 points, while Jhakia McDonald scored 14 for Long Beach.
Cuesta 65, Santa Barbara 60
Kati Sheldon scored 23 points, and the Cougars (11-9, 3-2 WSC) held off a late Vaqueros run to hold on for victory.
Cuesta jumped out to a 19-4 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, but Santa Barbara answered and cut the lead 32-28 at halftime.
After a back-and-forth second half, the Vaqueros took the lead on a pair of free throws with just under a minute remaining in regulation.
Sheldon would answer right back, nailing two free throws before a Cougars steal led to two more free throws for her as Cuesta took the lead for good.
“It’s a great win over a quality team and I just thought that we showed a lot of character tonight,” Cuesta head coach Ron Barba said. “When we got down at the end we didn’t give up, we came back and closed it down.”
Katie Rodriguez added 13 points for the Cougars.
San Diego 4, Cal Poly 2
Brian McPhee defeated Thibaut Visy 6-1, 6-2, and Jordan Bridge defeated Ciaran Fitzgerald 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the Mustangs’ season debut that was cut short because of inclement weather.
Marco Comuzzo fell 6-1, 6-4, Sebastian Bell lost 6-1, 6-2, Jurgen De Jager fell 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 and Andre Dome retired after dropping the first set 6-4 for the Mustangs.
Air Force 30, Cal Poly 15
Boris Novachkov (141 pounds) pinned Carter McElhany in 2 minutes, 12 seconds, one of the Mustangs’ three wins in the dual, but Cal Poly fell in Colorado Springs.
Novachkov is now 23-2 on the year.
Ryan DesRoches (174) defeated Clayton Cable, improving his record to 21-1 on the season.
Ryan Smith (197) scored the Mustangs’ other points by pinning Joshua Mohr in just 47 seconds. Smith improved to 17-9.
